Braila Overview
Brăila is a city in Muntenia, Eastern Romania, located on the Danube and is the capital of Brăila County. Brăila is the youngest city in Romania and one of the fastest-growing cities. The 2011 Census showed 180K people living there, making it a key driver of Sud-Est regional development.
Origins
Before the 14th century, there was a small village, probably inhabited by fishermen and merchants, in Brăila today. When the Mongols invaded Europe in 1241, they directly seized this sector.
A settlement called Drinago was mentioned in a few 14th-century Catalan and Castilian portolan charts (Angelino de Dalorto, 1325/1330 and Angelino Dulcert, 1339), as well as the Book of Knowledge of All Kingdoms. The name Brillaro was transcribed as Basileo in 1473. The sightings of this animal were mentioned as “lying down like a giant hand.”
As we can see from the ‘Rising Sons of Freedom’ plaque in the city, Proilava was formally referred to as either Proilabum or Proilava in Greek documents around 1695 AD. In German sources, it’s often referred to as Uebereyl. The name’s meaning and origin are unclear, but it is considered an anthroponym.
The first document that mentions Brăila is a privileged act granted by Vladislav I of Wallachia to German merchants of Brașov, exempting them from customs duties when they followed the road from Brașov to the Danube via Braylan. [Note: Braylan is a city that lies in Southern Romania]
Modern history
The city has been under siege several times, most notably in 1711 when a Russian Wallachian-odd army conquered it during the Pruth River Campaign. It was granted to Wallachia at the Akkerman Convention.
During its heyday in the 19th century, Constanta became one of the three main ports on the Danube. This status continued until two decades ago when heavy industry was concentrated in Galati. The city’s prosperity in the 19th century is maintained today, and it still provides many imports and exports.
In 1944, the city of Brăila was carried by Soviet troops during the Jassy-Kishinev offensive.
After the 1989 revolution, Brăila entered a period of sustained economic decline.
In 2018, a terrorist attack in the city left ten people injured

The population of Brăila at the 2011 census was estimated to be 180,302.
Climate
Brăila’s winter is cold, snowy, windy, and partly cloudy, but the summers are hot and mostly clear. The temperature in Brăila varies a lot over the year, typically ranging from 24-86 degrees Fahrenheit. The best time for hot-weather activities is from early July to mid-August.
Geography
Brăila is part of the strategically important Focșani Gate and a bridgehead for NATO to monitor the Bosporus Straits.
Economy
Brăila is an important industrial center, but this is not the only thing it has to offer. Accessible to small and medium-sized oceangoing ships, Brăila also has large grain-handling and warehousing facilities.
Transportation
Brăila’s tram line is the oldest in Romania and the city’s first electric tram system. The first line opened at the end of the 19th century and is still running today. There are four different types of buses in Brăila, offering service to most of the town. They work with the town hall and Braicar Company and, most importantly, provide transportation throughout the city. There is also an active railway station (where multiple trains come through).
