Budapest Overview

This is where the River Danube separates the hilly Buda district from the flat Pest. A funicular runs up to the top of Castle Hill, a stop on your tour of Budapest’s Old Town. The Budapest History Museum traces city life through fascinating exhibits about historical residents, events, and more. Trinity Square is a popular tourist attraction that offers the charming sight of Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion, with their sweeping views.

Etymology

In 1873, there were three separate towns named Budapest. They were joined into one city with a new name. Although Pest has often been used as a “common noun” for this city, other names might be more appropriate in some situations (such as when writing about the construction of railroads).

Early history

The first settlement on the territory of Budapest was built by the Celts around 1 AD. It was later occupied by the Romans and became their capital city – Aquincum. The Roman settlement became the capital of Pannonia Inferior 106 AD. Literally “the hill of Obuda”, this district is known for its historical status and it’s a surprisingly fashionable part of the city, especially on market days. Less commonly visited spots like Batthyánys Hill and Citadella are also nearby. The Romans left several incredible buildings, landscapes, and cities in Hungary. Aquincum is one of the best preserved Roman ruins in all of Europe and houses an extensive museum on its site.

The Magyar tribes led by Árpád were forced out of their home in the 11th century and had to find a new homeland. In 1456, after being defeated, they were permitted by the Christian king Szent Lőrinc to settle in the area that is now Hungary. An earlier Hungarian state was founded by a group of people in the 9th century, and it eventually grew into the Kingdom of Hungary. Research is placing the Árpáds’ likely residence on an early spot of central power near what became Budapest. It was invaded speedily by Tatars in the 13th century. King Béla IV of Hungary built reinforced stone walls around Buda which became the capital of Hungary in 1361.

This Buda was a cultural figure in the city of Budapest during the times mentioned above. The Italian Renaissance had a huge effect on the city and even opened up something new for Hungary. Bibliotheca Corviniana was Europe’s greatest library in the 15th century. It was the largest of any single institution and the second largest only to the Vatican Library. The University of Pécs and the University of Óbuda were established in 1367 and 1395 respectively. The first Hungarian book was printed nearby in 1473. These universities had about 5,000 inhabitants each at the same time.

Topography

Budapest is strategically placed at the center of a region called the Carpathian Basin. Carpathian Basin includes Transdanubia and Great Plain. By road, it is 216 kilometers south of Vienna, 545 kilometers south of Warsaw, 1,565 kilometers southwest of Moscow, 1 northeast of Milan, and 443 kilometers north.

Size of Budapest is around 525 square kilometers in Central Hungary. It’s very close to the agglomeration and its surroundings are on a map. The Danube enters Budapest by coming in from the north, then semi-circularly encircles two islands, one of which is Óbuda Island and the other is Margaret Island. Csepel Island is the largest of these three islands, but it’s just on its northern tip that it meets city limits. The river that separates the two parts of the city is 230 meters wide at its narrowest point in Budapest. Pest(the flat terrain of the Great Plain) is on one side and Buda(the hilly part) is on the other.

March and April can see variable weather conditions, with an increase in average temperature during that time. By late March and April, the weather is often fresh and pleasant during the daytime hours. Budapest is known for its sudden heavy showers, which occur especially in May and June. You’ll want to avoid visiting the city in the Autumn; this period is usually dry, with sunny days and moderate temperatures.
