Kranj Overview

Kranj is the 3rd-largest city in Slovenia and one of the most populated, with over 37,000 people. The town is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Ljubljana. Kranj is a city in the center of Kranj Municipality and the Upper Carniola region. It has significant electronics and rubber industries, with some of the biggest companies being Philips, Q-Cells (formerly UniQs), and Charter Rubber.

Geography

The city is known for its well-preserved medieval old town, situated at the Rivers Sava and Kokra. It’s served by a railway station located on the route from Ljubljana to Munich, Germany (via Jesenice and Villach, Austria). Slovenia’s national airport, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (in Brnik), is also conveniently close to the city of Kranj, making it a more desirable destination for groceries than its nominal client, Ljubljana.

Climate

In Kranj, the summers are warm and the winters cold. Different parts of the year will see different temperatures, usually between 23 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and there’s rarely a day that’s below 22 or above 68 degrees Fahrenheit. We recommend you visit Kranj when the weather is pleasant, from June to September.

Etymology

Kranj has been mentioned in texts since the 5th century and was attested as Cranium (and Chreinariorum) in 973, with Kreines mentioned in 1050. It went by China until 1065 and was called Chrainburch for the last time in 1291. Named after the Celtic tribe, Carnie, the Slovene region once lay beneath their rule. They are considered responsible for calling the area Korn’ь and the Latin title Carnia, which is an understandable confusion since this name also comes from Carnī. Carniola is the Latin for Carnia, a small region in northwest Slovenia, and Kleinburg was named after this region. The name of the town’s original Celtic tribe, Carinioba, derives from ‘peak or hill’ in Celtic and German.

History

Archaeological finds show that Kranj was settled in prehistoric times. Bulova is an archeological site with abundant artifacts from the Hallstatt era. They found a bronze ax and other items attesting to a settlement there. Some researchers believe that the area on the left bank of the Sava River is an acropolis and a Celtic burial site. The Romans founded the Cranium settlement at the confluence of the Sava and Kokra, where they met. In the 6th century, a primary Germanic homeland was here. An Ostrogoth cemetery is also in the area.” The Gothic settlement continued under Lombard’s occupation until it was destroyed around 580 by invading Slavs.

There is evidence of an old Slavic settlement in Carniola from the 9th and 10th centuries. As the seat of the margraves of Carniola in the 11th century, it was one of the most important settlements in that territory. The town of Kranj is believed to have developed around the early 13th century. At this time, a citizen named was documented in 1221, and Kranj was officially referred to as a town in 1256. It was once a court seat whose jurisdiction extended between Radovljica and Kamnik. In 1414, the citizens were relieved from paying tolls. In 1422 an ordinance was passed that all houses had to be built of stone to prevent fires, and in the same year, a parish school was established. This granted them the right to elect their judge. The Ottoman Empire destroyed Kranj in 1471. Emperor Frederick gave Kranj the right to collect tolls in documents from 1488, and a copy from 1493 also granted it the right to hold fairs twice a year. The town hospice has records dating back to the 15th century.

Kranj crafts developed during the Middle Ages – mills were first set up along the Sava and Kokra Rivers, and butchers followed these, fur merchants, hide and wood processors, then weavers of canvas and wool cloth. The Habsburg’s efforts to maintain Vienna’s monopoly on trade with Italy resulted in trade routes bypassing Kranj.

Economy

Kranj is a busy town, not just because of its urban landscape. It has a landscape of industrial buildings that date back to when the city was part of Yugoslavia before it fell apart in 1991. Many of these factories were shut down during the 90s following independence, meaning old abandoned sites that we might call “brownfields.” Kranj has developed into a significant industrial hub in recent years, and Export-oriented industries drive the city’s current economy. Major companies in the town include Goodyear (under their subsidiary Goodyear Dunlop Sava), Iskratel, and Hidria.

Culture

The city is known for its excellent sporting facilities, with soccer, tennis, basketball, and the largest aquatic center in the country. It hosted the Men’s European Water Polo Championship in 2003 (along with Ljubljana). The annual Youth Week festival and Carniola Festival are trendy around the world.

And as the proverb goes – ‘each family is a small country in its own right. One of their seminal works by Poe is his house, which was built in 1849. This American poet’s work can be found there as well as the manuscripts for a book he wrote and published in Poland called “Poezije.”
  7. Pungent Kranj

    – At the southernmost point of the old town, there is a relic of ancient fortifications on a high escarpment that overlooks the Kokra-Sava confluence. It is also lined by an enclosure that embraces most of the Kokra riverside, so it can serve as an excellent place to meet with people and share a moment.
  8. Kokra Canyon

    – There aren’t many cities with a river running through them, but Kranj is one of them. So one moment, you can be in the middle of town visiting the Town Hall and then cross the bridge to enter an actual nature reserve along a trail created from scratch.
  9. Layer House

    – One of the oldest parts of Kranj, the center was named after Leopold Layer, a famous Slovenian painter born in 1752. 10. Plečnik Staircase and Arcades

  12. Šmarjetna Gora

    – Closer to town, west of the Sava river, is another hill surrounded by forest. St Margaret’s Church sits on the top of it and has a view over the Sava River. At the bottom of the slope is Schrottenturn Manor House, built in 1537 as a meeting place for Lutheran church members.
  13. Brdo Castle

    – Important Summits happen at Brdo Castle, only 5 km from Kranj. The castle was constructed in the 1500s by nobleman Jurij Egkh, who served as an official in the Duchy of Carniola. It later became home to a succession of aristocratic families and princes.

    – The three locations of The Layer House, Kieselstein Castle, and Pungert team up to host Kranevo’s big annual music event, usually in the third week of August. The title “Kamp” tells you that there is a lot for musicians to experience. The workshops, jam sessions, and talks are perfect for anybody with some musical experience.
