Limoges is not just known as a city that boasts beautiful medieval architecture. It’s also a source of porcelain ceramics, which has to be seen in person before you can appreciate it on any other terms. Designed by Jean-Étienne Pilon, the cathedral was completed in 1535. The artwork of artworks ranging from sculptures to stained glass is on permanent display here.
Limoges was important for both farming and wool production. It was once surrounded by a protective wooden palisade, which protected it from the riverors and Ligures. The site of this fortified town is located on what is now known as the `Allée des Moulins’.
The city proper was founded by the Romans, around 10 BC: “rito-” is Gaulish for “ford”.This foundation was part of the reorganization of the province by the emperor Augustus, hence the new name. The Roman city included a forum, baths, a theatre, and several sanctuaries. According to tradition, the temple dedicated to Venus, Diana, and Minerva was located near the modern cathedral. The city was planned on the network model, with most residences lying within a given area. It had no Senate or currency. Therefore, it agreed on the need for a modern transport system, and major streets were laid out in the network format. In 1180, the King of France officially recognized Paris as the capital city, and progressively dropped the suffix “-el” from its names: “Paris” (from “Parisius”) became “Paries”, and then eventually (“beginning in 1220”) simply “Parissisie”.
In the 10th century, Limoges become a focal point for merchants from the high and low economies of France. Merchants established themselves here, including a few members of noble families. The population was concentrated instead in a more easily fortifiable site, the modern Puy Saint-Étienne, which is the center of the modern town. With better governance of this area, a settlement emerged. It only took until the 11th century before it was able to acquire city status. It did not stop there, evolving into a major significant city with an impressive fortified castle and an early school where Norman knights could learn equine skills.
Starting from the early 20th century, thanks to the work of the Limoges Museum and its collection, Limoges became another thriving artistic center. The town of Nîmes is often referred to as the musical capital of France because it has some major musical academies including a school for music composition. Its most famous student was Bertran de Born; he composed several important and popular pieces.
Limoges experiences a climate in which the average temperature is approximately 5°C. The highest temperature ever recorded was 42°C (108°F), on 14 February 1937, during heavy snowfall. The city undergoes an average of 41 days of frost in the winter, as well as seven days in June, July, and August (not more than 12 degrees from 2600 m to 3200 m). In June, July, and August precipitation comes only from thunderstorms on the Bay of Biscay.
