Stockholm Overview
On an extensive Baltic Sea archipelago, Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, includes 14 islands and more than 50 bridges. Gamla Stan (the old town) is filled with cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings. This is the location of the 13th-century Storkyrkan Cathedral, the Kungliga Slottet Royal Palace, and the Nobel Museum. Between the islands, passengers are shuttled by ferry and sightseeing boats.
History
Over the centuries, Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, developed what is now known as Gamla Stan, the Stockholm Old Town. Stockholm is Sweden’s largest city and capital, and that has always been its raison d’être.
Origins
Stockholm can be divided into two distinct parts – Stock-holm and “Log-islet,” but since no profound explanation has been provided, myths and legends have attempted to fill in the blanks. During the 17th century, the people at Birka decided to find a new settlement and to determine its location, and they had a log bound with gold drifting in Lake Mälaren. Consequently, it is often erroneously mentioned as Stockholm’s oldest building because it landed on Riddarholmen, where today’s Tower of Birger Jarl stands. In the late 1970s, dendrochronological examinations of logs driven into the strait north of today’s old town dated them to around 1000. Stockholm Palace’s predecessor, the Three Crown Castle, is often believed to have originated from these wooden structures. Although no solid proof exists, the medieval city overgrew around it in the mid-13th century. As the capital of the Lake Mälaren Region, Stockholm can be viewed as being descended from at least two much older cities: Birka (c. 790–975) and Sigtuna, which is still present but dominated the region between 1000 and 1240 – a capital that has relocated several times since then.
Middle Ages
Birger Jarl and King Valdemar first recorded Stockholm in 1252 letters. Nonetheless, the two letters need to provide more information about the city’s appearance, and events during the following decades remain vague. The absence of a perpendicular city plan in medieval Stockholm indicates spontaneous growth, but German merchants invited by Birger Jarl were key to the city’s foundation. Stockholm quickly became the largest city in Sweden and the de facto national capital during the end of the 13th century. Since its founding as the largest and most important Swedish city, the Swedish government has been inseparable from and dependent on Stockholm. As late as the 16th century, under the reigns of Kings Eric XIV and John III, whose Swedish government often traveled overseas with them (see below), the city still needed to be considered a national capital.
Location
Stockholm is on Sweden’s east coast, along the Baltic Sea, where Sweden’s third-largest freshwater lake, Lake Mälaren, flows. Several islands make up the central part of the city, which is connected to the Stockholm archipelago by fourteen bridges, and Riddarfjärden bay is the geographical center of the town. The city’s waterways make up over 30% of its area, and its parks and green spaces make up another 30%.

A municipality is an administrative unit defined by its geographical boundaries. The City of Stockholm (Stockholms stad in Swedish) is the municipality’s semi-official name. Municipalities are subdivided into district councils responsible for their respective areas’ schools and social, leisure, and cultural services. The municipality can be divided into three main parts:

Education
In the 18th century, Stockholm was a center of medical research and higher education, including the Stockholm Observatory. In 1811, Karolinska Institutet became the formal name of medical education. As Scandinavia’s largest higher education institution of technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Swedish: Kungliga Tekniska högskolan) was founded in 1827. By 2008, Stockholm University had 52,000 students. Founded in 1878 and granted university status in 1960. Among its historical institutions are the Observatory, the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and the botanical garden Bergianska trädgrden. One of the few private institutions of higher education in Sweden, the Stockholm School of Economics was founded in 1909.
Demographics
In 2020, the population was 975,551; by 2030, it is projected to be 1,079,213. Among the inhabitants, 482,982 were men, and 492,569 were women. The population’s average age is 39 years; 40.1% is between 20 and 44 years old. Four hundred eleven thousand two hundred and seventy-three people over 15, or 42.2%, were unmarried. Marriage accounted for 27.5% of the population or 268,291 people. There were 104,099 divorced people out of the total population, which is 10.7%.
Language
Stockholmers refer to themselves as Stockholmers (“stockholmare”). In Greater Stockholm, other languages are spoken in addition to Swedish, including Finnish, one of Sweden’s official minority languages; English, along with Albanian, Bosnian, Syriac, Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish, Persian, Somali, Dutch, Spanish, Serbian, and Croatian.

Stockholm is not only Sweden’s capital, but it also houses many of the country’s cultural institutions. Three World Heritage Sites are located in the Stockholm region: Drottningholm Palace, Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery), and Birka. As the European Capital of Culture in 1998, Stockholm was honored with the title.

Football and ice hockey are popular spectator sports. A rugby league club called Stockholms Kungar was formed in 2015. The team will compete in the Swedish National Rugby League championship as Stockholm’s first Rugby League team.
