Vejle Overview

Vejle is the site of two councils, while the city itself is found in Denmark and is made up of a river and its valleys. Located in the southern portion of Denmark, Vejle’s council manages local issues.

Population

The city has a population of 60,231 (as of 1 January 2022)

History

The word ‘Vejle’ is derived from the Old Danish word wæthel, meaning ‘ford’ or ‘wading place’. The city of Vejle has been at a crossroads for many years and has a long history stretching back to Viking times. It’s believed the town was already inhabited in 1256, and they received their first documented privilege (a legal right given by a monarch) from King Valdemar III in 1327.

A dig at St. Nicolai Church in downtown Vejle revealed residence from 1100 AD, although it’s uncertain if the castle, Castrum Wæthel, was ever even here.

During the Middle Ages, Vejle was important as a market town, and developed along those lines up to the mid-17th century, trading with cities such as Lübeck and Flensburg, in what is now Germany.

In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Vejle’s population was diminished due to plague and war. In 1796, the town was made the seat of Vejle County and quickly developed, benefitting from improvements like a new harbor on the fjord, a railroad station, and modern utilities.

From the mid-19th century into the 20th century, Vejle developed from a provincial market town into a busy industrial center that was eventually known as the “Manchester of Denmark”. The city was home to many cotton mills and is still to this day.

Geography

You can visit the city of Vejle in the southern part of Denmark for a different perspective on its history. Founded on an island in Vejle River formed by a hill during the last ice age, it offers a cool, calming experience.

Vejle is known for the forested hills that rise on both sides of the town and fjord. This is a country where the highest natural elevation is less than half of that at sea level, so it’s no surprise they’re known for Vejle.

Denmark has two river valleys that meet close to the city of Vejle. Unlike most other places in Denmark, the Grejs Valley (Grejsdalen) is not a ravine, but rather a large valley with two rivers converging in it. The ring-shaped valley is said to be the longest tunnel valley in Denmark and one of its three most significant natural.

The Little Belt and the Kattegat connect Vejle on the east with Denmark, through which it connects to the Baltic Sea, and Eastern Europe. The Skagerrak connects Vejle in the North with northern Sweden and Norway, through which it also connects to Europe.

Economy

Vejle is the cultural and economic center of Vejle Municipality, in addition to being a key focus among the Triangle Area’s three main industries. In some ways, the industry has not been as relevant in the city’s development as it continues to be today. But it still plays a large role when it comes to new business opportunities and other high-tech sectors.

Industry

During the Industrial Revolution, Vejle was known as the “Manchester of Denmark” due to its extensive textile mills. The local rivers provided water power to mills, including the extensive facilities of De Danske Bomuldsspinderier (The Danish Cotton Mill) in which Denmark’s first cotton mill was founded. Based on the history of their textile industry, Vejle has seen a decline in its textile sector. However, they still hold appeal with over 25% of the city’s population employed in one sector. Today, many of the old mill buildings are used for art studios, office space, and apartments.

Later on, Vejle was also a major supplier of other industries like the industry that produce chewing gum. It is home to one of the largest in the world and produced the Stimorol brand globally.

Tulip has been an important employer in the city for many years. They still produce parts in the north and close to Vejle harbor but they don’t have any factories anymore.

As the economy of Vejle continues to shift from the industrial sector to high-tech, many software companies have also moved into the city.

Shopping

Vordingborg might be referred to as the shopping capital of central Denmark but when it comes to variety, Vejle has that beat. Chains and specialty shops are primarily located along its pedestrian downtown, where tenants include bakeries, fun shops, and more. In recent years, even further into the future, cities have been looking to public works projects like public art installations or street lights to improve their image. Cities like New York put a lot of effort into attracting tourists, who then spend money on drinks and other items in the city, including the addition of a walkable square, new public art and architecture, and making Grejs River more enticing to explore.

Vejle has a shopping center on the outskirts of the city for those who wish to shop at some of the best shops in town. It contains 38 different stores that can provide you with an extensive selection and two restaurants for your convenience. The center lies within a pedestrian mall, allowing easy access and plenty of foot traffic every day.

You can try a nice variety of street food concepts at Paladspassagen, which is a popular shopping and dining spot in Gothenburg.

Politics

With Social Democrats Christian Jacobsen as their first elected mayor, Vejle is a town known for being hesitant in its support of trade unions. For decades, Willy Sørensen served as the longest-serving Social Democratic mayor in the history of Denmark. He joined the city council at age 27 and was elected mayor at 31. He died 32 years later in 1978.

In 1993, the Social Democratic dynasty was broken, when a candidate from a coalition of opposition parties, Flemming Christiansen (the mayor of Aarhus from 1998-2002 then 1998-2009) became mayor. In 2009, the Social Democrats were out of power again. This time it was Liberal candidate Arne Sigtenbjerggaard winning the mayorship.

It turns out that many Vejle natives have also made a career in national politics, as former Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen was one of them. the former minister of finance Troels Lund Poulsen (liberal), former Minister of Health Torben Lund (social democrat), and the former minister of transport Flemming Hansen (conservative).

Environment

Vejle has been looking for ways to reduce waste and improve its environmental policy since the mid-80s. This city employs sorting garbage into compostable and non-compostable waste, which is then properly disposed of. Residents must sort their trash according to these guidelines.

Vejle Municipality has also begun several nature restoration projects. The most ambitious of these has been the restoration of Kongens Kær wetlands around the Vejle River about 10 minutes outside of the city limits. The city has been working on a project to create two new public beaches by the summer of 2019. The Albuen Beach Project and the Tirsbæk Strand – Lindholm Beach Project will be completed within three years.

Education

Vejle, located on the island of East Jutland, is home to University College Lillebælt which is made up of several educational institutions merged to create a leading institution of higher education.

Adult and professional education are available in Vejle through the Region of Southern Denmark, the Folkeuniversitet (Adult Education Centre), the Vejle Idrætshøjskole (Athletics Professional College), and Skolen for Gastronomi, Musik and Design (School for Gastronomy, Music, and Design).

On the secondary education level, Vejle offers several options: Vejle Handelsskole (Vejle Business School) offers business and professional programs; Vejle Tekniske Gymnasium (Vejle Technical School) offers vocational and technical education and Rotterdam International Study Centre with its campuses in the Netherlands. Rosborg and Armstrong offer combined programs with linguistic studies and science.

Based on the number of primary schools in Vejle, there are 11 regular primary schools (folkeskoler), 2 independent schools (friskoler), and 5 private schools (privatskoler) – one secular, one Protestant, one Catholic, one Islamic, and Waldorf-Steiner method school. Vejle has a unique program for students starting in late primary school and going through Vejle Handelsskole.

Sports

Vejle Boldklub is a traditional football club and has won the Danish Championship (Superliga) five times, and the Danish Cup six times. Vejle BK has trained many talented players, including Allan Simonsen, who in 1977 – one of Denmark’s most successful footballers ever – became the first Danish player to win the prestigious European Footballer of the Year award. Today, Vejle Boldklub is in a ramping-up period that has seen the club officially open a new stadium in spring 2008.

Vejle’s largest indoor sports facilities are mostly housed in the DGI-Huset recreational center in western Vejle. In the past, the facility has housed high-profile events such as European Women’s Handball Championship and the Danish Op.

Cycling legend Tony Rominger of Switzerland was born in Vejle and legendary cyclist Bjarne Riis has a house in Vejle. When Danmark Rundt comes to Vejle, the riders have to make their way up the hill a few times on its loop around the city.

Climate

During summer days in the city of Vejle, you’ll get some partly cloudy skies and summer temperatures ranging from 29°F to 70°F. It rains frequently in the winter months but it’s rarely below 16°F or above 79°F on an average day. If you’re looking for a time when the weather is warm, spring and fall are your best bets.
