Villach Overview

Villach is a city on the Drava River in Austria, near the Italian and Slovenian borders. It’s known as a gateway to nearby lakes Faak and Ossiach, as well as the Villach Alps. On the main square, St. Jakob’s Church steeple has sweeping views. Nearby in Schiller Park, the Relief of Kärnten is a giant 3D scale model of Carinthia. On the other side of town,

Villach is a city in the southwesternmost part of Austria near the border of Italy. It’s located at the mouth of the Drau River and nearby Lake Ossiac, which is just west of its municipal boundaries.

In Villach, summers are comfortable but can sometimes be wet and winters are freezing and snowy. Winter temperatures typically reach as low as 11°F or as high as 86°F.

Despite the heat of late summer, Villach has a lot to offer for those looking to enjoy some cultural and activity activities. From July through early September, you’ll find everything from fancy river cruises on the Salzach River to outdoor adventures that are perfect for hot days!

Many artifacts from the Romans have been found in Villach and they were very near an important Roman road that led into another province, Noricum. The oldest human trace discovered here dates back to the late Neolithic. On the topic of mansions, the one at Warmbad was likely located in the area during the pre-Migration Period and the Slavic settlement of the Eastern Alps. After that, it would have become part of Thuringia, Germany, or Austria.

Villach became a city on 1 January 1932 and was administered by a Democrat. After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, Villach’s mayor’s enthusiasm changed and he joined the Nazi regime. On 9 November 1938, many events took place in the town of Villach. This included the destruction of Jewish businesses, homes, and synagogues. In response to this holocaust and other such events, more government figures began to put a halt on immigration policies which made it nearly impossible for Jews to enter Austrian society after that point. A memorial for the 1919 border conflict that led to the Carinthian Plebiscite caused controversy when it was inaugurated in 2002. It was only this memorial and other landmarks along this boundary that brought attention to one man: Kraus, who, despite not having been particularly prominent in the conflict, happened to be the only person specifically honored.

During World War II, allied forces bombed Villach 37 times. About 42,500 bombs killed 300 people and damaged 85% of the buildings. Nevertheless, the city quickly recovered. Today, Villach is a bustling city with commerce and recreation, built on war memories that won’t fade away.
