To know the suitable Gift Baskets for Ramadan, you should know what Ramadan is all about.
In Islamic culture, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During Ramadan, Muslims remember the time when Allah or God gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. During Ramadan, Muslims generally fast and restrain from doing pleasures. They only do to pray to become closer to Allah or God. It is also a month when families gather and celebrate this particular month.
Ramadan starts in the morning after the night when the crescent moon is visible which is marked as the start of a new month. During ancient times, traditional people used to find slight crescents using the naked eye only. Today, to make the Ramadan start time more consistent, astronomical calculations are sometimes used. But the start of Ramadan depends on the command of religious leaders.
In 2018, Ramadan started last May 15, and the fasting began on the next day. For the upcoming years, they calculated it to begin on May 5, 2019, April 2020, and April 12, 2021, respectively.
Ramadan is the time for sacrifice, reflection, and spiritual growth. On this important holiday, Muslims around the world become united and celebrate Ramadan together. During Ramadan, Muslims practice the fourth pillar of Islam which is known as “Sawm.” It means fasting during Ramadan. Generally, there are five Pillars of Islam which are Shahada, Salat, Sakat, Sawm, and the Hajj.
Fasting starts from sunrise and ends with sunset. Fasting is not only about abstaining from eating and drinking. During Fasting, they are also prohibited to smoke, take oral medicines, do sexual activities, gossiping, fight, and lying. It is slightly difficult for a Muslim individual not to eat for 17 to 18 hours a day for a couple of days. But according to them, a person is not only embodied with a physical body but also a soul as well.
Also, Fasting during Ramadan gives Muslims a significant opportunity to cleanse their respective bodies and mind. It helps them to be more devoted and develop brotherhood among other Muslims. During Ramadan also, Muslims reinforce the importance of charity to the Muslims who are suffering.
Apart from fasting, Niyyah is one of the most important aspects of the Ramadan fast. Niyyah means intention. Aside from abstaining from food during fasting, you should also achieve the requirement of Niyyah. The requirement is to intend in the heart that fasting is meant to be worship for God or Allah alone. Some people used to fasting for dietary reasons which are not relatively connected with Niyyah.
During Ramadan, restaurants are closed during the daytime. Most of the families wake up early before the sun rises and they will eat a meal called sohour. When the time sun sets, fasting is ended, and the family will eat a meal called iftar. Iftar is usually composed of sweet food and drinks to give energy to the Muslims who undergo fasting. In iftar, they also include desserts called konafa or qattayef. Konafa is a type of cake that is made from sugar, wheat, raisins, honey, and nuts. Like the Konafa, Qatayef is a cake but it is quite smaller than the Konafa, and it is usually made up of raisins and nuts.
The most joyful part of Ramada is the end of the month or the breaking of the fast which is called Eid al-Fitr. In this day, Muslims used to have beautiful lights and decorations. Streets and Mosques are decorated with “fanoos” lanterns which are made up of tin and colored glass.
During Eid al-Fitr, Muslims dress in the most fashionable clothes, share sweet treats, and visit their respective families and friends. As part of the Ramadan values which are charity and doing a good deed, Muslims used to feed the poor and offer help in the form of contributions to the mosques. As Ramadan ends, Muslim people used to have many benefits in spiritual aspect but also in values aspect as well.
