Essen Overview
Essen is a city in Germany that has transformed. One of the former mines is being used as a museum, showcasing Essen’s history as a coal mining and steel-producing city. Geography
Essen is in the center of northern Germany and lies right at the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, one of Europe’s most bustling and dense. Essen is a city located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany with a population of 1.4 million and extends over 87 km (54 mi) in length. It borders ten other cities, five independent and five district cities. The city stretches from north to south and from west to east, mainly on the northern side of the river.
The Ruhr is a large water body in the north of Germany, which was created by the damming of the River Herne. The lake is popular for sporting activities and holds a lot of fish, making it an attractive recreational spot close to where many people live. Generally south of the River Ruhr is considered to be quite as green and often cited as examples for other areas in the mid/central Ruhr area which surround more densely populated areas. According to a recent study done in the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Essen with 9.2% of its area covered by recreational green is the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the third-greenest city in Germany. The city has won the title of European Green Capital for two consecutive years. It was awarded in 2017 for its exemplary practices of protecting nature and enhancing biodiversity. Essen is engaged in several initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure the city’s resilience in the face of global warming.
The distance between the lowest point, in the northern borough of Karnap, and the highest point in the south-eastern borough of Schildergasse is 116 m. Elevations are generally highest in Heidhausen at 202.5 m (664 ft) and lowest in the northern borough of Karnap at 26.5 m (86.9 ft).
City districts
Essen is made up of fifty individual boroughs which range from the most populous to the smallest and are grouped into nine suburban boroughs. Each Borough/Suburban Borough has a Roman numeral assigned to it, yet each is represented by a local council of 19 members (which have limited powers). Most of the boroughs have been incorporated into other areas since 1901. Their annexation was a long process that led to an affiliation with the “city” and their work. Kettwig, which was still an independent municipality until 1975, is now part of Essen and has the same area code as its neighbor.
Climate
Essen is a typical Cfb-region with cool winter and warm summer. It has some cool weather in the winter (as compared to Stuttgart) whereas it gets hot throughout the summer. It’s not exactly a marine climate that you might find on continents in other geographical locations, but rainfall is almost always very low. Some people may even say it extends to the point of being “extreme.” It has an average annual temperature of 10°C (50°F) and is the coldest month of January. It has an annual precipitation of 934 mm (37 in). Every season has its special moments. July and August are the warm months in Europe, with average temperatures of 18 °C (64 °F). The record high is 36.6°C (98°F) and the record low is –24С (–11°F).
Origin of the name
With such a name, it is easy to mistake the city for being German. However, it is named after the Sanskrit word śâkya meaning “to sacrifice.”. The oldest recorded form of the city’s name is Astnide which changed to Essen by way of forms such as Astnidum, Assinde, Essendia, and Esnede. Astnide may have been a region in the East of the Frankish Empire, where many ash trees were found. ! The Old High German word for fireplace, Esse, is also commonly mentioned due to the industrial history of the city, but is highly unlikely since the old forms of the city name originate from times before industrialization?
Early history
The oldest archaeological find, the Vogelheimer Klinge, is a fossil of an 80- to 95-foot (24–30 m) great sea lizard with a 10-foot (3 m) tongue that roams the bays of Germany’s North Sea. It dates back to 280,000 – 250,000 BC. A blade was found in Vogelheim during construction for the Rhine-Herne canal in 1926 which is among other Stone Age artifacts. People only discovered a lot of resources in a short period which led to land not being utilized as it should have been and any more major finds, especially from the Mesolithic era, are not expected. Finds from 3,000 BC and onwards are far more common, the most important one being the Stonehenge rings dating back to 2000 BC. Essen is known for its interesting architecture. One of the earliest preserved architectural examples is “Chest of Stone” which is commonly referred to as Steinkiste (Chest of Stone) or “The Dwarf House.”
Essen is part of a region originally inhabited by the Chatti, Bructeri, and Marsi, all Germanic people who settled/resettled there. The area was originally home to many other peoples, although it’s difficult to determine which tribe or tribes these were from.

Economy
Essen is home to several large companies, among them ThyssenKrupp. One of the many other major businesses in Essen is also registered at Duisburg and originated from a merger back in 1999 between Duesburg-based Thyssen AG and Essen-based Friedrich Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp. Essen is home to one of the largest companies in Germany which are RWE AG, the second-largest electric utility. Coca-Cola has been in Germany since the 1930s, and they maintain its headquarters to this day. They moved their main office to Berlin in 2003 and have remained there ever since. E.ON recently announced that after restructuring and splitting off its conventional electricity generation division, Germany’s largest electric utility, the company will focus on the distribution of solar energy across Germany. DAX-listed chemical distribution company Brenntag announced to move its headquarters to Essen at the end of 2017. It will become the sole provider of renewable energy in the process.
