The city’s award-winning zoo has been around for a while and is home to many large animals like polar bears, lions, orangutans, giraffes, and hippopotamuses. Located on bomb-damaged land beside the Rhine-Herne Canal, this zoo features only larger animals.

Schloss Horst 

In the Horst district of Westphalia is an imposing Renaissance palace, one of the oldest and most important historical buildings in the region. It was built in 1578 and it’s considered to be part of the Liperenaissance style.

Nordsternpark

On the Ruhr’s Industrial Heritage Trail, visitors can find different places to look at, many of which are former mining areas. The Nordsternpark is one such place that has been transformed into a recreation area. In 1993, the mine closed down and in just four years, it had been completely regenerated for Gelsenkirchen to host the Bundesgartenschau in 1997.

Zeche Zollverein 

It’s only 10 minutes from Essen by car on the route of industrial heritage, and it’s one of the most beautiful sights you’ll see in Germany. Zeche Zollverein is a UNESCO world heritage site and is an awe-inspiring industrial complex turned museum.

Schloss Berge 

Schloss Berge is a moated castle in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, dating back to the 1200s. The property was made more luxurious over time and currently mixes Baroque and Neoclassical styles.

Musiktheater im Revier (MiR) 

A distinguished example of post-war architecture, the Musiktheater im Revier dates to 1959 and is listed as a German-protected monument. There are two halls inside (Großes Haus and Kleines Haus), and the venue stages around 320 performances a year for the public in attendance.

Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen 

The city also has a great art museum that is housed in an impressive neo-baroque villa with a modern glass extension. They have various pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries on display, taking up a lot of space. The museum only opened in the 1950s and has already started to accumulate a huge collection of global art, from Expressionist Lovis Corinth, Dadaist Max Ernst, and Bauhaus teacher Lajo Moholy-Nagy.

Halde Rheinelbe 

In Gelsenkirchen’s southernmost district of Ückendorf there’s a slag heap at the site of another disused mine, Zeche Rheinelbe. This coal mine shut down in 1928, long before many others in the area.

Halde Rungenberg 

It is a fitting memorial to Gelsenkirchen’s industry, sitting as it does in the middle of this bare slag tip, one of the few still visibly remaining. You can scale 310 stairs to its top where you’ll find a picturesque worker settlement and an excellent view overlooking the town below.

Zeche Consolidation 

The Stockmeyer colliery is a former Victorian Zeche (mining company) that is still active today. It was opened in 1862 and became the joint property of seven different Ruhr companies. The production from this mine helped support the industry during its peak period in Germany’s history.

Mining Settlements 

Industrial history enthusiasts will be in their element when they see how the 19th-century collieries of Gelsenkirchen moved to accommodate a surge in workers. As one of the oldest worker housing in the Ruhr, Dickebank was built for miners working at Holland, Alma, and Rheinelbe collieries. Around 180 people called Dickebank their home at that time.

The park has attractions themed around movies and TV shows. The entrance is easy to find and offers great value for money.

Freizeitpark Schloß Beck 

Not only is Movie Park an amusement park for children and families but just next door to it there is a new theme park. So if you’re visiting with lots of kids, that’s even easier! Schloss Beck is an ornate country house built in 1760, an impressive time capsule of a historic period. It was originally built for Elector Frederick of Cologne and his family.

The building has been around for a long time and is connected to many different eras of architecture. The latest makeover happened in the late 1800s due to the rising population growth. Different architectural styles have been used over the centuries and can be seen throughout the structure.
