Athens, Greece’s capital, is located within what is known as the Attica or the Attic Peninsula. It is a region that encompasses metropolitan Athens and the countryside of the country. The geographic area extends from east to west for about 30 kilometers and its southern end borders Boeotia to the north and Megaris to the west.
The ancient Roman geographer Pausanias claims that the city was originally named Actaea, but the name changed after Atthis of Athens bestowed her name on the city.
Attica is a triangular peninsula jutting into the Aegean Sea and is divided by the 10-mile-long Cithaeron mountain range that runs north-south to the south.
In the west of Eleusis, the Greek mainland narrows off and enters a small peninsula into Saronic Gulf. On the east coast of Attica, also known as the Athens Riviera, there is a bay next to the gulf. The peninsula of Thriasian sits in the flow of three large allegiances: its north is the Sea of Mounts and its east is home to Pedias (plain) and Mesogeia (mesa). The southern border, meanwhile, has many mountain ranges separating it from plains all over. As all of you know, the mountains of Attica are the Hymettus, the eastern portion of the Geraneia, Parnitha (the highest mountain), Aigaleo, and Penteli. The plan is pockmarked by a variety of hills and is the most notable ones being the Tourkovounia Hill, Lykavittos Hill, the Acropolis of Athens itself, and Philopappou Hill. Mesogeia isn’t too far from Mount Hymettus, a bird’s-eye view of which can be seen by looking east out at the Euboean Gulf. The seaside is known for its amphorae and ancient ruins but also for its rich olive groves spread across the hillsides. The location area known as Lavrio makes up the southeastern tip of the Attic peninsula.
The Athenians believed they had arrived as the first people and never moved from there. Although the historical record is sketchy, according to ancient traditions current in the classical period, Attica was a refuge for Ionian Greeks who abandoned the rest of their country and took refuge in this region during the Dark Ages. We don’t have detailed records of the events that led to war between the Achaeans and Ionians, but we do know that there were two major invasions around 500 BC – one from Dorians who had been driven out of their homelands by other Dorians, and another from Achaeans who had lost their homeland due to natural disasters. Supposedly, the Ionians integrated with the ancient Atticans and considered themselves part of the Ionian tribe. Many Ionians later left Attica to colonize the Aegean coast of Asia Minor and became known for their seafaring skills.
Attica was divided into numerous towns and villages but many of the inhabitants lived in autonomous agricultural societies during the Mycenaean period. Several prehistoric settlements have been found in the Mycenaean period, including Marathon, Rafina, Nea Makri, Brauron, Thorikos, and others.
According to tradition, Attica was composed of twelve small communities during the reign of Cecrops, the famous Ionian king of Athens. Among these, the most famous were Cecropia, Tetrapolis, and Epacria. Strabo also names Brauron, Cytherus, and Sphettus. He mentions Cephisia and Phaleron but doesn’t assign them a name. These were said to have been later incorporated into an Athenian state during the reign of Theseus, the mythical king of Athens. Modern historians consider it more likely that the communities were progressively incorporated into an Athenian state during the gradual expansion of Athens during the Mycenaean period which was roughly from 1600 BC to 1100 BC.
Until around the 6th century BC, aristocratic families had their own independent lives. They lived in a suburb called Hippios Kolonos which was then beside their home city of Athens. Athens became the political center of Greece under Cleisthenes, who brought reforms that prevented Athens from further taking over the local communities. These reforms, which led to the devolution of Attica into a hundred municipalities and three large sectors, also led to the disintegration of the old system. go ahead and include Eleusis and the area between it and Cape Sounion, as well as Penteliko on the plain of Mesogeia. The social and political structure of Greece at its height was divided into ten tribes that were each governed by a “trittýs” (a third, which came to be known as the Peloponnesian League). At the top sat the city-state of Athens.
Attica enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with distinct, long, dry periods in the summer and a short, wet period in the winter. The highest precipitation is experienced during the winter months. The population of Attica lies mainly between 350 and 800 m above sea level.
3.742 million (2019)
Attica is the prefecture of Greece and it is famous for hosting the capital of Greece, Athens. It is surrounded by the Aegean Sea from three sides, while on its north side it borders mainland Greece.
