The city of Gdańsk (Danzig in German) is a port city on the Baltic coast of Poland. Long Market is the center of Main Town. It was rebuilt after a WWII bomb destroyed everything, but in the process became a colorful place with lots of shops and restaurants. Nearby is Neptune Fountain, built over 400 years ago and serves as a city symbol. Gdańsk is also a center for engagement with the modern world, as boutique shops sell contemporary jewelry made from amber.
Gdania is the river that runs through Gdańsk. There are several different theories as to why its name was chosen, but most believe it was derived from the word “Godania,” which means “place on the Motlawa.”
Linguists argue that the name stems from the Proto-Slavic adjective/prefix gъd-, which meant wet or moist, with the addition of the morpheme ń/ni and the suffix -sc. Hagen and Celts believed it was used to describe Slavs who had been soaked in water, but this hypothesis is now hotly contested. Others have said that the name evolved from the expression Ku Dansk, which means “to/towards Denmark.”
The oldest evidence of a settlement on the lands of Gdańsk came from the Bronze Age (estimated to be from 2500-1700 BC). The first evidence of permanent settlement on the shore dates back to the 9th century when a mighty stream flowed into the Vistula Lagoon. At that time, most of the land held by free individuals was agricultural and fishing-dependent. In the 10th century, Poland was an important trade center. It came to a standstill when King Mieszko I took over the region in c. 975 and started calling it his own country.
Gdańsk was thought to be the first city started by rebuilding in Poland, as it has been settled since 997. The earliest written record confirms this tradition by mentioning Saint Adalbert baptizing the inhabitants of Gdanska. Sources don’t exist for the 10th and 11th centuries. The city celebrated its millennial anniversary in 1997 based on the date of Adalbert’s Vita.
Archaeological evidence for the town’s origins was retrieved mainly after World War II had laid 90% of the city center in ruins. This then allowed archaeologists to excavate, enabling new evidence to be discovered. The oldest seventeen settlement levels are dated to between 980-1308, and Mieszko I is thought to have erected a stronghold on the site in the 980s. The Polish state under the control of the Piast dynasty was thus connected with Ancient Trade routes by this construction. Archaeologists have discovered the city’s archeological ruins from the 10th century, indicating that it was inhabited.
Gdańsk has a climate with both oceanic and continental influences. According to some categorizations, the Gdansk climate is considered Oceanic Climate (Cfb), while others classify it as belonging to the Continental climate zone (Dfb). It depends on whether the mean reference temperature for the coldest winter month is set at -3 °C (27 °F) or 0 °C (32 °F). Depending on your local climate, that might make a difference. Some specific years do not get much precipitation in the winter, while other years drop vast amounts of snow and frost in the summer as well. This is an indication of significant continental differences. However, seasonal extremes aren’t as pronounced as those seen in inland Poland.

Initiatives such as electronics, telecommunications, I.T. engineering, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals are seeing high use and a growing number of approvals. Amber processing is an essential part of the economy along the Baltic coast, as the majority of amber deposits in the world are found here. Summertime is an excellent time for Pomeranians and their summer destination of Gdańsk on the Baltic coast. Millions of Polish and other European tourists flock to the beaches in this region, which are also one of Poland’s major tourist destinations.
