Queluz Overview

Queluz is a Portuguese city with a population of 15,000 people, and it’s also the only city in Sintra Municipality and the Lisbon metropolitan area. It is famous for hosting Queluz National Palace, the 18th-century palace of the Portuguese Royal Family, and notable institutions like the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art.

History

There is no consensus on the origin of the name Queluz. David Lim and José Pedro Machado have hypothesized that it comes from Arabic câ and lûs, which would mean almond in English—making sense due to the area’s abundance of almond trees. Another example is that some people believe Mount Abraão is the center point of creation. The story told by people who hold this belief is that it was once submerged beneath water and appeared on top of the mountain at sunrise.

The first humans in this area date back to Late Neolithic or early Chalcolithic times because archeologists have found many artifacts left behind by these long-gone societies. The town’s history is rich and very diverse, and it began in 3000 BC and spread to the modern-day parish of Massamá.

In 1147, Afonso I of Portugal’s forces conquered Lisbon because of its strategic location. To defend it, a similar campaign within the Sintra mountains successfully captures Queluz, bringing the entire heath under Christian control.

The region wasn’t known as a place of much activity in the early centuries up until the 18th century. Clergy and nobility developed homes, farms, and a few estates.

The Infantado Palace was built in the 18th century by Infante Pedro of Braganza with help from his architect brother Mateus Vicente de Oliveira; it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following his marriage to Queen Maria I of Portugal, King João VI radically expanded the estate into a pleasure palace, today known as Queluz National Palace.

Ever since the Portuguese Royal Court moved to Queluz during the reign of Maria I and Pedro III, more and more nobles have been setting up estates and palaces in this region. Sintra was a popular retreat for many noblemen.

Culture

Between July and August, there’s a free fair outside the D. Maria Pousada that recreates the golden age of the Queluz National Palace. Activities on offer include traditional food stalls, arts and crafts, exhibits, and games. The Portuguese Eighteenth Century Fair will bring you back in time to experience life during the reign of Queen Mary I. You can buy arts and crafts from artisans and merchants that reflect a time when this work was valued. Choirs are joint in this city on Sundays, and the three in Quez have been performing choral concerts since the inauguration of Queluz National Palace.

Visitors to the Monte Abraão Fair, held every Saturday on Rua Cidade Desportiva, will have a large selection of items for sale. There are clothes, handicrafts, fruits and veggies, flowers, and more!

Sport

Queluz has loads of sporting teams. One of the most popular is Real Sport Clube, a football team. C.A. Queluz is another well-known sports team; they play basketball in their spare time. However, their primary sport is athletics. Real Sport Clube plays as a club in the Segunda Liga (Portugal’s 2nd most crucial league competition).

C.A. Queluz won the Portuguese Championship in 1984 and 2005, and they also held the Portuguese Cup in 1983. The team achieved a double in 2005, and JOMA has already won the Portuguese championships in individual and group competitions.

Climate

Queluz has a temperate climate year-round, with reasonably mild summers and cold winters. The summers are mostly dry, warm, and clear, and the winters are wet, cold, and partly cloudy. The best time of year for hot-weather activities is from mid-July to early September when the temperature typically varies from 47°F to 81°F and below 41°F or above 92°F.

Population

The population of Queluz in 2001 was 78,273 inhabitants.

Transport

three train stations serve Queluz: Monte Abrão, Barcarena-Massamá, and Queluz-Belas. It’s in the Sintra-Lisbon corridor, with connections to Amadora and Sintra.

Vimeo bus lines connect Queluz to Oeiras, Lisbon, Amadora, and Carcavelos.

With the taxi system, Queluz offers a way to call and request taxi services. The system is very centralized and operates from specially designated areas called “taxi squares.”

Best Things to Do in Queluz (Portugal)

  1. Palace of Queluz

    – The Queluz Royal Palace is a must-see attraction. It was built in the late 18th century and was designed by Dom Pedro of Braganza, who later married Queen Maria I and became King Consort in 1826. No expense was spared in the interior and exterior of this beautiful building. The French architect Robillon gave it a Baroque feel on the surface, and you’ll be impressed with how grand it is.
  2. Palace of Queluz Gardens

    – We hope you enjoy exploring the grounds of the Palace of Queluz as they are as magnificent as any you’ll see in Portugal. A formal French garden with boxwood hedges, fountains, vases, and sculptures takes up the back of the building. Marble columns and statues enclose it. Museu da Pólvora Negra – Once you know where to find it, you won’t miss this historical complex a few minutes from the Palace of Queluz. In these mustard-colored baroque buildings, a gunpowder factory was in operation from the 16th century onward.
  3. Aquário Vasco da Gama

    – This city-center aquarium is easily accessible by car. If the traffic levels are decent on the CREL (Lisbon’s ring road), you can get there within minutes from Queluz. The museum first opened in the late 19th century after King Carlos I had a strong personal interest in oceanography. The museum’s first exhibits were things he gathered on his own, and you still get to see them today (you might know him better as the king of Spain). There are 90 tanks containing 300 different species of fish. Plus, there are many more specimens in the museum.
  4. Belém Tower

The Belém neighborhood is a few kilometers from Lisbon. Still, it acts as a good base if you see the world’s second-oldest functioning European monastery. There are also three UNESCO sites and many Portuguese national treasures within your reach. The first of these is a defensive tower on an island in the Tagus.
  5. Jerónimos Monastery

    – Diogo de Boitaca, the architect who introduced the Manueline style, is said to have helped build this 16th-century monastery. It’s considered one of his high points and another cherished Portuguese monument. The architect Boitaca was given much freedom with his design and found inspiration in the details like the columns and vaults inside. On the other side, he also created an impressive decoration around the cloister’s arches.
  6. Museu de Marinha

    – This maritime museum is inside a wing of the monastery. It makes sense that a landmark funded by Portugal’s Age of Discovery expedition should glorify the country’s maritime legacy.
  7. Palácio do Marquês de Pombal

    – There’s still more from the days of courtly life to be found at this luxury estate, with a spectacular cave in the gardens and agricultural facilities that were part of old estates, such as the wine cellars, fishery, and olive mill.
  8. Jardins da Quinta Real de Caxias

    – One of the features of the gardens is that they were initially built in 1722. The gardens were created on a parterre and enclosed by pavilions, and many statues were also added that were made by Machado de Castro, an 18th-century sculptor. These days, the gardens use boxwood hedges in all sorts of shapes.
  9. Forte de São Bruno de Caxias

    – The Portuguese Restoration War in the 17th century saw an extensive network of fortifications built to protect Portugal’s interests at sea. The Cabo da Roca to Belém Tower line was begun during this time – at over 1,500km long, it was not just a coastal fortification but an encircling barrier around the country. Forte de São Bruno de Caxias was a fundamental part of the Barra do Tejo fortification line, which history shows are one of the largest and most important lines in Portuguese military strategy.
  10. Praia de Carcavelos

    – The Atlantic Coast begins just south of Queluz, near the coast next to another coastal fort. And being the first proper beach in Carcavelos, it attracts people in their droves, whether in winter or summer.
  11. Dolce Vita Tejo

    – If you’re interested in shopping, the neighboring town has the largest shopping mall in Portugal. There’s likely to be one on offer for almost everything fashion-related. If you’re looking for speed, a quick visit should do it!
  12. Kidzania is part of a network

which means that the kids (up to around 12) will get a taste of what it’s like to work in various professions. They can become a doctor, fire-fighter, journalists, chefs, and more.
  13. Sintra

    – The Portuguese kings and queens were big fans of Sintra, a little town that was only 15 minutes away from Queluz. There are many hills to explore, but what is truly special is the crown of palaces that this humble town has had.
