Baia Mare Overview
Baia Mare is a city in Romania located on the Săsar River and borders Ukraine. It is the capital of Maramureș County, and the town lies in a subregion of Transylvania. It’s 600 km away from Bucharest, 50 km from the border with Hungary, and 70 km from the border with Ukraine.
Prehistory
The city was built on the middle course of the Săsar River in an area with a warm Mediterranean-like climate that is perfect for living. This goes as far back as ancient times.
Ancient times
During the Bronze Age, the region was inhabited by Thracian tribes. Later on, it was included in the Dacian Kingdom, which was formed by King Burebista when mining exploration started because the area was rich in silver and gold.
Middle Ages
Baia Mare was first mentioned in a 1328 decree by Charles I of Hungary under Rivulus Dominarum. Hungary was a European country that developed into a kingdom with documents going back to 1347. This year, the town had an established mining industry that made it prosperous. The city also accepted people with differing opinions and could move about with little restriction. In 1411 the town and its surrounding areas, including the mines, were given to Janos Hunyadi by King Sigismund of Hungary as recognition for his decisive help in stopping the Turkish advance.
The town experienced a period of prosperity, and the Cathedral was built. Today, St Stephen’s Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in town. The first school, Schola Rivulina, was opened in Baia Mare in 1547 by the reformed church following the Protestant Reformation.
Coat of arms
The coat of arms of Baia Mare was designed in 1999 after the Romanian Revolution to commemorate many things, including the city’s long history, and as a celebration of Romania’s liberation.
The shield has a party-per-pale design. The dexter side features a red miner carrying minerals in his arms. On the sinister side, it features a blue church tower on top of a ring of azure mountains. The shield is topped by seven towers that represent its level of nobility.
The tower in the crest is symbolic of this city’s cultural and ecclesiastical tradition, while the miner in front means this is an essential local workforce activity.
Geography
The city is located in the vicinity of Gutâi and Igniş Mountains. The altitudes of some parts reach 1400 meters. The area is well-known for its outstanding landscapes, and the mountains can be easily accessed from the city. There are many famous hikes in our country. Some of them include Igniș (1307 m), Mogoșa (1246 m), Gutâi (1443 m), Cresta Cocoșului (1450 m), Piatra Soimului (839 m), Plestioara (803 m) and more.
The city is situated in the valley of Baia Mare, and all sides are bounded by hills and mountains, which causes a mild climate. This can be explained by looking at the outskirts of Baia Mare. They are the only place in Romania where you’ll find a chestnut tree, and they usually need to be in a Mediterranean climate to grow. This is the northernmost reach of these trees in Europe. However, abrupt temperature changes occur, and during cold winters, the temperatures can fall below -20 degrees Celsius.

The Baia Mare metropolitan area has a population of 215,932 and covers an area of 1,395.38 square kilometers (538.76 sq mi). It also includes the municipality of Baia Mare. five towns (Baia Sprie, Cavnic, Seini, Șomcuta Mare and Tăuții-Măgherăuș), and 13 communes (Cernești, Cicârlău, Coaș, Coltău, Copalnic-Mănăștur.

In Baia Mare, summers are warm, and winters are chilly and snowy. Over a year, temperatures usually range from 22°F to 79°F and rarely drop below 5°F or exceed 89°F. The best time to visit Baia Mare for summer activities is June, July, and August.
Economy
Since 1989, Baia Mare’s economic activity has fallen on hard times because of the almost non-existent mining industry in the surrounding area. To date, many rehabilitation activities in Baia Mare have led to significant economic improvement, and the city has since become one of the most economically developed cities in the region. The town benefits from its supermarket as it has opened one of the largest shopping malls within a 100 km radius. The Italsofa sofa factory is one of the largest in Eastern Europe and is situated near the Baia Mare city highway ring.
