A Coruna Overview

This city is located on a peninsula in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. A sweeping coastal view can be seen from its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules. A magnificent arcaded plaza is situated in the heart of the medieval old town, surrounded by narrow pedestrianized streets. A statue of Marie Pita in this square, a woman who warned the city about Sir Francis Drake’s invasion.

Origin

It needs to be clarified where the name comes from. There is no explanation for the birth or meaning of the term, and it appears to be from Crania. The name Crania was first documented during Ferdinand II of León (reigned 1157–1188). In Galician-Portuguese (as well as Castilian Spanish), the cluster ni naturally evolved into a sound, which is written n, nn, or N.H. in old Galician orthography, and in Spanish (later abbreviated to *, like the original Latin cluster “nn”), and N.H. in Portuguese and alternative Galician spelling. Galician-Portuguese article “A” corresponds to English the; Castilian Spanish la (“the”) is equivalent.

It is suggested that Crunia is derived from Cluny, the French town. The Cluniac movement significantly influenced Europeans during its height (between 950 and 1130). Burgos Province also has a city named Corua.

Geography

The island of Coruña is located on a peninsula, and its isthmus was at times formed only by a small strip of sand. As a result of erosion and sea currents, sand accumulated and gradually enlarged the beach.

Climate

A Corua is classified as a Mediterranean climate (Csb) in the Köppen climate classification. Winter is often unpredictable and unsettled, with strong winds and abundant rainfall coming from Atlantic depressions, and autumn is usually mild with spring-like temperatures. Frost and snow are extremely rare due to the ocean’s temperate climate (the difference between winter and summer temperatures is only nine °C (16 °F) on average). Since January 1987, there have been no significant snowfalls in the city. It is located in zone 10b of the plant hardiness chart.

History

The city expanded from the peninsula, the site of the later Tower of Hercules, to the mainland. Known in Galician as Cidade Vella (Old City), Cidade Alta (High City), or Cidade (City), it is built upon an ancient Celtic castle. According to legend, the Brigantes and Artabrians lived there.

During the 2nd century B.C., the Romans conquered the region; they used the strategic location to become an important port for maritime trade. In 62 BC, Julius Caesar established commerce with what are now France, England, and Portugal through the city (at the time called Brigantium). As a result of the Farum Brigantium Tower of Hercules built during the 1st and 2nd centuries, the town began to grow but declined after the 4th century, particularly after the Vikings’ incursions, which forced most of its residents to flee into the interior of O Burgo’s Estuary.

It still had a commercial port after the fall of the Roman Empire, but it increasingly focused on the Atlantic rather than the Mediterranean. It was also affected by the deurbanization that followed the fall of the Roman Empire. A little village of laborers and sailors occupied the city between the 7th and 8th centuries.

The lack of archaeological evidence on the northwest coast of the Iberian peninsula can’t determine whether the Muslim invaders reached the city. Muslim rule in Galicia in the early 8th century consisted primarily of a brief overlordship of the remote and rugged region supported by a few garrisons. The city was little more than a village surrounded by Roman ruins, so the invaders did not show much interest in the ruins.

Population

A Corua has a population density of around 6,700 persons per square kilometer and a population of 247,604 residents.

Foreigners accounted for 5% of the city’s population in 2010, with 12,344 living there. Ten percent of the population is Brazilian, eight percent Colombian, and seven percent Peruvian.

The majority of the population speaks Spanish and Galician interchangeably, according to 2008 data.

There are 431,332 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of A Corua.

Economy

The region of A Corua is currently Galicia’s wealthiest economic engine. Over the last few decades, the city’s structure has changed – it now shares some administrative functions with Ferrol, nearby. It has become the wealthiest metropolitan area of Galicia due to its industrial growth, especially in finance, communication, planning, sales, manufacturing, and technical services. In addition to unloading fish, the port handles crude oil and solid bulk, which make up 75% of the port’s traffic.

As a result of Amancio Ortega Gaona’s 1974 founding of Zara, this city has become the world’s largest clothing chain today.

Education

The country has 38 preschool centers, 47 primary schools, 29 vocational schools, and 33 secondary schools.

Higher education is represented by the University of A Coruña, a public university founded in 1989, the UNED branch, and CESUGA, a private university center in alliance with University College Dublin, which offers Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. Among the master’s degrees offered by NCG Business School are an MBA and other business-related master’s degrees.

Transport

A Corua is the destination of one of the radial roads emanating from Madrid (N-VI). An old radial road lies parallel to a highway (Autova A-6). Ferrol is also connected to the Portuguese border by the toll motorway AP-9, which crosses Galicia’s major cities.

Airport A Coruna, formerly Alvedro Airport, is located in Culleredo, approximately 7 kilometers away.

San Cristobal Station is the departure point for railway services. High-speed rail will connect the city with Madrid and Vigo in the coming years.

The Bus Station at Caballeros Street is the departure point for regional and intercity buses. The metropolitan area of A Corua and other Galician cities and towns are well connected.

Compare de Tranvas de A Corua provides local transportation in the city. There are 24 lines served by 93 vehicles on its network, and taxi tanks are also available all over the city for regular taxi service.

Sport

The A Corua basketball team CB Corua plays in the Spanish 2nd division LEB Oro.

Spanish First Division is the current home for OAR Ciudad 1952, the city’s handball team.

In the Galician regional gridiron football league LGFA, Towers Football plays American football.

Many national and international championships are held at the Casas Novas riding club, located on the city’s outskirts.
