Bilbao Overview
A green mountain range surrounds Bilbao, an industrial port city in northern Spain. A skyscraper-filled downtown makes it the de facto capital of Basque Country. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, sparked revitalization when it opened in 1997. Most of the museum’s attention is focused on the curvy, titanium-clad building, which houses famous modern and contemporary works.
Etymology
In most languages, the city’s name is Bilbao. It has been agreed that Bilbo is the historical name of Bilbao, with Bilbao as the official name according to Euskaltzaindia, the official regulating institution for the Basque language. Although the term Bilbo does not appear in old documents, a reference to swords presumably made of Biscayan iron in Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor is referred to as “bilboes,” suggesting that the term has been around since at least the sixteenth century.
Demonym
Bilbaino, -a, is also commonly pronounced Bilbaino/a (sic). The term bilbotar is used in Euskera and sometimes in Spanish in the Basque Country. As mountains surround the village, its residents affectionately refer to it as the botox, meaning hole. As a result of this nickname, the boy was given the nickname “botxero.”. Bilbao has also been nicknamed “chimbos,” from many birds hunted in these places during the 19th century.
History
On top of Mount Malmaspin, remains of an ancient settlement dating from the 3rd or 2nd century B.C. were found. Mounts Avril and Artxanda also have burial sites dating back 6,000 years. Ptolemy identifies the old settlement of Bilbao as Flaviobriga, but some authors identify it as Amanun Portus.
Below the Church of San Antón, ancient walls dating from around the 11th century have been found. In the fourteenth century, Bilbao was one of the first towns established in the Biscayan territory, along with Portugalete in 1323, Ondarroa in 1327, Lekeitio in 1335, and Mungia and Larrabetzu in 1376. Bilbao was founded by Diego Lopez V de Haro, the third Lord of Biscay, on 15 June 1300 in Valladolid and confirmed by King Ferdinand IV of Castile on 4 January 1301 in Burgos. On the right bank of the Nervión river, Diego Lopez built his new town on the grounds of the elite of Begosa. He granted it the fuero of Logrono, a collection of rights and privileges that would shape its development in the years to come.
A new municipal charter was granted to the city in 1310 by Mara Daz I de Haro, niece of Diego López V and Lady of Biscay, extending even further its commercial privileges and making it a mandatory stop for all trade coming from Castile to the sea. As a result of this second charter, the road from Ordua to Bermeo, which at the time was the most important trade route in the lordship, would now cross the San Antón Bridge in Bilbao rather than Etxebarri Pass. Consequently, Bilbao gained prominence as a trading post, to the detriment of Bermeo, which had previously served as the territory’s main port. Bilbao also enjoyed exclusive rights to trade between Las Arenas and the city. In 1372, John I of Castile granted Bilbao special privileges regarding iron trade, further strengthening the city’s position. Work with Great Britain and Flanders made Bilbao a vital port.
Location
Bilbao lies about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of the Bay of Biscay on the northern edge of the Iberian Peninsula. The city covers an area of 40.65 square kilometers (15.70 square miles), of which 17.35 square kilometers (6.70 square miles) are urban and 23.30 square kilometers (9.00 square miles) are mountains. While there are measurements between 6 meters (20 ft) and 32 meters (105 ft), the official average altitude is 19 meters (62 ft). In addition, it is located at the center of Great Bilbao. Alonsotegi is to the south; Dario and Etxebarri are to the north; Galdakao, Loiu, Sondika, and Zamudio are to the east; and Arrigorriaga and Basauri are to the west.
Hydrology
Bilbao shares the hydrological artery of Biscay with its primary river system. A convergence of the Nervión and Ibaizabal rivers in Basauri forms an estuary called the Estuary of Bilbao, the Estuary of the Nervión, the Estuary of the Ibaizabal, or the Estuary of the Nervión-Ibaizabal. With a flow of 25 m3 (883 cu ft) per second, the estuary stretches for 15 kilometers (9.3 mi). River Cadagua is its main tributary, originates in the Mena valley, and has a basin of 642 square kilometers (248 square miles), mainly in Burgos. This river separates Bilbao and Barakaldo.
Climate
Bilbao has an oceanic climate (Cfb), with precipitation occurring all year round and no well-defined dry season. Because of the latitude and atmospheric dynamics, rainy days make up 45% of the annual total, while cloudy days make up 40%. Between October and April is the wettest season, with November being the wettest month. Although Bilbao rarely sees snow, the surrounding mountains may have snow on their tops. It is more common to see sleet during the winter months, about ten days per year.

Bilbao is the largest city by population in the Basque Autonomous Community and the Basque Country as a whole, with 342,397 people living on a land area of 40.59 km2 (16 sq mi). A population of 1,037,847 makes Bilbao the largest city in the Bilbao metropolitan area.
Government
As the capital city of Biscay, Bilbao is home to both the autonomous and central governments’ administrative entities related to the province. Each department of the independent Basque government has a provincial delegation in the city, coordinated by a representative. Furthermore, the city is home to the official Government Subdelegation of the Government of Spain.
Economy
Approximately 47% of the Basque autonomous community’s population lives in the Bilbao metropolitan area, out of which 15% live in Bilbao. Its GDP per capita is higher than the Spanish and European Union averages in the region of Greater Bilbao, where it occupies a central position.
Cuisine
Eels and cod are common ingredients in Bilbao dishes made with seafood from the coast and estuary. Several of Bilbao’s original dishes are similar to the ones in the province of Biscay, such as bacalao al pil pil (cod fish fried in olive oil, garlic, and chili peppers), salted cod with Biscayan sauce, mostly made from choice peppers and onions, merluza en salsa verde (hake fish with green sauce), chipirones en su Tinta (squid with ink), morros a la vizcaína (beef snouts with Biscayan sauce), revuelto de perretxikos (scrambled eggs with mushrooms) and desserts like Canutillo de Bilbao (puff pastry filled with custard or chocolate), Pantxineta (puff pastry filled with custard and almonds), rice cakes and butter buns.).
Language
Spanish is the most commonly spoken language in the city, followed by Basque, a dialect of the region. City residents are less likely to talk to Basque than in neighboring municipalities, such as Bermeo and Lekeitio. A bilingual Basque-speaking population of about 28% made up about 28% of the total population in 1986. In 2001, 37% of the population spoke Basque, an increase of continuous growth since then. Deusto, Begonia, and Abando were home to over half of the Basque speakers under 30.

Education
The Basque Country has a bilingual education system, with students choosing between four linguistic models: A, B, D, and X, depending on whether Basque or Spanish is the predominant language in the classroom. Primary School students in Bilbao prefer model D (where Basque is the vehicle language and Spanish is taught as a subject). In contrast, secondary students prefer model B (where some subjects are taught in Basque and others in Spanish). Finally, 67% of Baccalaureate students choose model A (Spanish is the vehicle language, and Basque is a subject). Ninety-seven percent of pre-university students choose English as a foreign language.
