Fadrell is the name of a Moorish castle that dominated the current-day towns of Castellón and Almassora. It was located on the top of the hill of Magdalena. A capitulation occurred between James I of Aragon and the region in 1233. Following this, attempts were made to establish new settlements in the area, beginning with the aquaria of Benimahomet, the first Christian project to leave the castle. In 1248, James I expelled the Mudejars from the area following the Mudejar revolt of 1247. As a result of a privilege granted to Ximén Pérez d’Arenós by James I on September 8, 1251, the current settlement was not founded until the 1250s. In 1252, the move was said to have been completed on the third Sunday of Lent.

Moats, walls, and towers protected the city during the Middle Ages, and a church, later a cathedral, was built.

The town was one of the last strongholds during the Revolta de les Germanies (local guild revolt) in the 16th century. During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–14), it supported Archduke Charles of Austria but was later captured by Philip d’Anjou’s troops.

During the 19th century, the city walls were torn down, and the city slowly expanded, a process that was interrupted by Napoleon’s War of Independence (1804-14) and the Carlist Wars (1833–63). The newly constituted province of Castelló was seated in Castelló in 1833. With the arrival of the railway, the port’s enlargement, and the construction of representative buildings (Provincial Hospital, Casino, Theater) and parks in the second half of the 19th century, the city began to expand again.

Founded in 1991, the University of Jame I is located on a modern campus. Industrial production, tourism, and handicrafts are the mainstays of the local economy.
