In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is a city in southern Spain’s Andalusia region. In particular, the Alhambra is known for its impressive examples of medieval architecture dating from the Moorish occupation. As well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens, this sprawling hilltop fortress complex contains royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools.
Granada’s historical name in the Arabic language was غرناطة (Ġarnāṭa). Granata (or Karnata) may mean “hill of strangers.”
At least 5500 BC, people inhabited the region around what is now Granada. According to archaeological artifacts found in the city, the site, including the present-day avenue of Gran Va de Colón, had been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Among the oldest ruins in the area are those belonging to the Iberian Bastetani tribe, who founded an oppidum called Ilturir around 650 BC. This area has also been called Elibyrge. Eventually, Iliberri and Iliberis emerged as names for this settlement. Florentia Iliberritana (‘Flourishing Iliberri’) was the name of the Roman municipium, which arose in 44 B.C. from Iliberis as a Roman colony.
Scholars have long debated whether present-day Granada can be identified with Roman-era Iliberis and whether the two settlements are connected historically. Modern archeological digs on the Albaicín hill have been uncovered, demonstrating the presence of a significant Roman town on that site. Little is known about the city’s history in the period between the end of the Roman era and the 11th century. There is no direct archaeological or documentary evidence establishing the precise location of the Synod of Elvira, which took place near this area circa 300 AD (Elvira is derived from Iliberri). Depending on where it took place, the ancient Roman town or a region known as Elvira may have been involved.
Granada lies on the Vega de Granada, a depression or plain within the Baetic mountain ranges, followed to the west by Archidona and Antequera and the east by Guadix, Baza, and Huéscar.
Water streams from the Sierra Nevada and minor secondary ranges irrigate the Vega’s fertile soil, draining into the Genil River, which cuts across the city center in an east-west direction. Monachil, a left-bank tributary of the Genil, also flows through the city, discharging into it west of the city center.
Granada has two climates: the Mediterranean climate (Csa) and the semi-arid climate (BSk). Summers are hot and dry, with daily temperatures averaging 34 °C (93 °F) in the hottest month (July); however, temperatures can reach 40 °C (104 °F) often during these months. December through January are the wettest months of the year, and winters are cool and damp.
Granada city, Alquera del Fargue, Bobadilla, Cerrillo de Maracena, and Lancha del Genil make up the municipality of Granada. Cerrillo de Maracena has been integrated into Granada city due to its expansion.
As per the municipal population register, Granada had 231,775 residents in 2021, of whom 106,987 were men (46.15%) and 124,738 were women (53.75%). Granada’s population has decreased since the 1990s as smaller towns in the metropolitan area have grown.
Granada’s gastronomy is influenced by Arabic and Andalusian cuisine, with a solid Arab and Jewish heritage reflected in its condiments and spices, including cumin, coriander, cinnamon, raisins, almonds, and honey. Granada’s traditional cuisine, according to Miguel Alcobendas, is the result of the living together of Muslims, Jews, and Christians during the Nasrid Kingdom from Granada from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries (when Granada surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs). In the following century, there was a miscegenation with the Christian kitchen, which led to pork becoming more critical in Granada than elsewhere in Spain since its consumption allowed its eaters to demonstrate distance from the persecuted religions because it is forbidden by both Muslims and Jews.
Barley, wheat, sugarcane, and tobacco are among the agricultural products produced in Granada. Apart from these crops, olive trees are also commonly grown, as are oranges, lemons, figs, almonds, and pomegranates. Sugar refining is also done in the city for manufacturing purposes. Additionally, vineyards and wines contribute significantly to the city and region. 1.3 billion dollars worth of products were exported from Granada in 2020.
The public health system is the autonomous community’s exclusive responsibility, providing two types of care: primary, which constitutes the first level of access to the system, and specialized. A variety of health centers and offices offer primary care, varying in the level of care they provide.
A light rail network, the Granada metro, was planned in 2007, but the Spanish economic crisis drastically slowed its progress. The 21st of September was the official start date for the service. Albolote, Maracena, and Armilla are all served by the single line that crosses Granada. You can also take a train, a taxi, or a bus to get around Granada.
