Oviedo Overview

The town of Oviedo is located between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay in northwest Spain. Known for its medieval old town and Gothic Oviedo Cathedral with its 9th-century Holy Chamber, it is the capital of Asturias. Archaeological artifacts from Asturias are displayed in the nearby Archaeological Museum of Asturias. An extensive collection of Spanish art at the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias includes two palaces.

History

Asturias was founded in 720 by the Visigothic aristocrat Pelagius (685–737), who revolted against the Muslims occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. Until Pelagius’ revolt in the northern mountains, the Moorish invasion in 711 had controlled most of the peninsula. The Muslims largely ignored the Kingdom of Asturias, located in an economically poor region of Iberia. The area where Oviedo is situated now was uninhabited in 720.

Two monks, Maximus et Fromestanus (Latin: Maximus et Fromestanus), founded the city in 761. Eventually, a small church dedicated to Saint Vincent would be constructed in that settlement. Before it became an Asturian city, Oviedo was founded on an uninhabited hillside without Visigothic or Roman foundations. The Alfonso I dynasty ruled from 739 to 1037, after Pelagius died in 737. There was a hostile relationship between the Asturian Kingdom and southern Moorish Spain. During one of Hisham, I’m numerous campaigns against the Christian kingdoms in 794, Oviedo was sacked and pillaged.

According to legend, king Alfonso I “set the whole Gothic order in both the church and the palace.” Oviedo was meant to resemble Visigothic Toledo in its layout. Following the settlement of the kings in Oviedo, most of Toledo’s architectural style and imagery was adopted. The old Visigothic capital in Toledo did not necessarily resemble Oviedo. Instead, Oviedo’s churches and buildings follow the tradition of the late provincial Roman period. It is impressive to see the scale of the buildings in Asturias, a poor agricultural region of Spain at the time.

As early as King Fruela I (757–768), Oviedo had a rich architectural tradition. A palace and a nearby church were constructed by King Fruela I of Asturias, the fourth of the Asturian monarchs. Alfonso II later restored the church. The establishment of Oviedo as a capital and ruling seat was due to the move of the court from Pravia and the creation of the Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago de Compostela by a later king, Alfonso II The Chaste (791–842), a significant event in Oviedo’s history. Originally, Oviedo was formed by a church dedicated to The Saviour, the Cathedral of San Salvador, and a royal palace during Alfonso II’s reign was the San Julian de Los Prados church, which is one of the best preserved Asturian churches. Alfonso II’s successor, Ramiro I (842–850), continued Alfonso II’s construction streak. Ramiro, I constructed two buildings, the Church Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. The Church Santa Maria de Naranco was likely to be Ramiro initially in I’s palace and later changed into a church. Oviedo was the principal royal residence, and the Court of the Palace was centered there. Those in the nobility of Asturias controlled this court.

Geography

Oviedo lies between the Nalón and Nora rivers in the center of Asturias. The city owed a total debt of €135 million in 2009.
