The city of Jaworzno is located in southern Poland, close to Katowice. The Przemsza River (a tributary of the Vistula) lies in the Silesian Highlands. Lesser Poland includes Jaworzno as part of its historical province. Before its formation in 1999, the city belonged to the Katowice Voivodeship. In addition to Katowice, Jaworzno is part of a greater Silesian metropolitan area with a population of 5,294,000. In 2021, the city’s population will be 89,350.
A4 Highway Junction 41 is a few miles northeast of the municipality. From its foundation until 1975, it was administratively connected with Kraków, Lesser Poland’s capital. It lies in the Silesian Highlands, in the historical region of Lesser Poland. It belonged to the Kraków Voivodeship until 1795 when the Habsburg Empire seized it along with Kraków. From 1815 to 1846, it belonged to the Free City of Kraków, annexed by Austria and merged with the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Poland welcomed Jaworzno back in 1918. As a result of the abundance of jaw or trees (sycamore maple) in this area in the past, the city was named after them.
According to the Local Government Reorganization Act, Jaworzno became part of the Silesian Voivodeship (province) on January 1, 1999. It previously belonged to the Kraków Voivodeship (1975–1998) and the Katowice Voivodeship (1975–1998). With a population of about 3,5 million, Jaworzno is the largest metropolis in Poland and one of the largest in the European Union. This urban expansion thrived as mining and metallurgical industries developed rapidly in the 19th century. As part of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, Jaworzno and 14 neighboring cities formed a multi-municipal structure in 2006. The area of the city is 1,304 square kilometers (503 square miles), and it has a population of 2 million people.
In this area, the climate is continental and humid. There is an annual average temperature of 8 °C (46 °F) (a January average of 1.7 °C (28.9 °F), and a July average of 17.7 °C (63.9 °F). The wettest month of the year is July, which receives an average of 750 mm (29.5 in) of rain. The area’s characteristic weak winds blow from the west (Moravian Gate) at about two m/s.
Jaworzno is located at the intersection of several road routes, such as the A4 motorway (part of European route E40), the S1 expressway, which is connected with the A1 highway (both forming part of European route E75), and the National Road No. (Warsaw–Bytom), and Voivodeship Road 903.

There were traces of a gord on Grodzisko hill during the Middle Ages. The first mention of Jaworzno dates back to 1229, and a parish church dedicated to St. Wojciech was built here in 1335. Jaworzno was a small village near the much larger and more important town of Chrzanów in western Lesser Poland. The Przemsza River marked the border between Lesser, Poland, and Silesia as early as 1179. Until 1922, it also formed part of Poland’s state border. Jaworzno was ruled initially by the Kraków bishops. In the aftermath of Austria’s seizure of Silesia at the end of the 17th century, several coal mines were developed near Jaworzno. Several metals were found here in the 18th century, including silver, lead, iron, and zinc. A coal mine was opened in Szczakowa in 1767, the first in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
As a result of the Partitions of Poland, Jaworzno became part of the Habsburg Empire. In 1809-1815, it was part of the Duchy of Warsaw, and in 1815-1846, it belonged to the Free City of Krakow, which was annexed by Austria in 1846. As of November 1918, Jaworzno was still part of Austrian Galicia. Three Emperors’ Corner became famous in the 19th century for meeting the borders of three empires (Germany, Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary). Jaworzno’s Szczakowa district was connected with Kraków and Prussian Upper Silesia in 1847 by a new railway line. As a result of industrialization, the village became a center of commerce. Eighty-four percent of Galician coal was extracted from Jaworzno’s coal mines by 1898 when a power plant was opened. Late in the 19th and early 20th century, several new factories were built here. Thus, Emperor Franz Joseph, I granted Jaworzno a town charter on September 21, 1901.
Sixty percent of the town’s area is green space, forests, and undeveloped land. As a group, Jaworzno has environmentally valuable regions rich in flora and fauna and diverse landscapes and vegetation. The Dolina Zabnika nature reserve, the Dobra Wilkoszyn landscape protection area, Sasanka natural surface monument, Grodzisko Hill, and Sosina Lake are some of them. Among the 41 plant species protected within Jaworzno’s boundaries, 11 are partially covered.
Jaworzno offers a wide range of educational and cultural activities and sports facilities at the European level. Two thousand five hundred spectators can be accommodated in the city’s central arena, the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa and the Sosina water sports center hosts the Polish water-skiing championships annually.
