The area of the current downtown of Mysowice is believed to have been inhabited since the 12th/13th centuries by agricultural and fishing communities. The town was founded around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Under German law, Mysowice was incorporated as a town between 1260 and 1306. A document mentioning the name of Myshaowice concerning the local parish priest Hunold dates back to 1308. Alternatively, Nicholas II, Duke of Opava and Racibórz, said in a document issued on December 15, 1360, that the town of Mysowice had long had privileges under German law. The borders of the Mysowice land were also marked, centered on the city itself, which was still private property at the time. St. Holy Cross church, which dates back to the early fourteenth century, is the city’s oldest still-standing place of worship. It was initially built out of wood but was rebuilt around 1810 after burning. A church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was built during the city’s expansion in the fourteenth century.

Names of places are manageable, and there are several theories about where they come from. It is derived from the old Slavic word Mysław, Mysł, or Miłosław. Names derived from family settlements that end in “ice” or their old Polish version (“icze”) are characteristic of Slavic patronymics. These are the descendants of the founder or owner of the city, i.e., “Mysłowicz.” According to one version, the alleged founder of the village, the knight Mys_ow, was a model for the image of a male head on the coat of arms of Mysłowice.
