You found the right gift. You paid for shipping. Then your friend in Belgium got a message asking them to pay before the parcel could be delivered. That is the moment most senders learn how customs works.
Cross-border gifting is confusing because the rules depend on where the parcel starts, who sends it, what it contains, and what it is worth. A gift from your aunt is treated differently from a gift ordered through a shop. Wine follows its own rules. The UK now counts as outside the EU. And new EU parcel rules started in July 2026.
This guide explains each of those points in plain language. You will see why fees happen, what they usually cost, and how ordering from inside Europe removes the customs step for your recipient. You will also find gift ideas, timing advice, and a short checklist.
Gifts get charged because parcels from outside the EU must clear Belgian customs before delivery. bpost, the Belgian postal operator, states that parcels from outside the European Union pass through customs by default. Customs then decides whether VAT, import duty, or excise duty applies.
The recipient usually pays these costs, not the sender. bpost sends a payment request by email, text, or letter. The parcel is only released after payment. bpost notes the whole process can take a few days.
If customs needs more paperwork, such as an invoice or a note from the sender, the recipient must upload it. If nobody responds within 14 days, bpost returns the parcel to the sender. That is how a birthday gift turns into a two-week headache.
Belgium customs duties on gifts depend on the value, the contents, and who sent the parcel. A gift is not automatically tax-free. Several separate charges can apply.
Import VAT. Belgium charges VAT on most goods arriving from outside the EU. The standard rate is 21 percent, and some goods use 6 percent.
Customs duty. Since July 1, 2026, the EU applies a flat customs duty of €3 per item category to low-value parcels under €150 sent to consumers. Before that date, those parcels were duty-free. A gift basket with chocolate, coffee, and biscuits may count as several item categories.
Clearance fee. bpost charges a fee for handling customs formalities. Its published rates are €21.50 for most parcels up to €150 and €40 for parcels above €150. Private couriers set their own fees.
Excise duty. Alcohol, tobacco, and some other goods carry extra excise tax on top of VAT.
The €45 gift allowance helps only in narrow cases. A parcel sent occasionally from one private person to another can enter duty-free and VAT-free if it is worth €45 or less. bpost excludes alcohol, perfume, and tobacco from this relief.
The rule does not cover a gift you order from a shop and have shipped directly. In that case, the sender is a business, so the parcel is treated as a commercial import. Most gift baskets also cost more than €45 once shipping is added.
Yes. Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is outside the EU customs area. bpost names the UK as an example of a country where parcels may trigger import costs, even when you order from a European-looking webshop. Senders in London, Manchester, or Edinburgh face the same customs step as senders in New York.
The customs border sits at the edge of the EU, not between EU countries. A parcel shipped from Slovenia, Germany, or the Netherlands to Belgium stays inside the EU single market. It does not need an import declaration, and bpost does not hold it for customs clearance.
That is the logic behind customs-free gift delivery in Belgium. You still pay for the gift and its delivery. But the person receiving it does not see a payment request, does not fill in a form, and does not wait while the parcel sits in a clearance queue.
There is one exception worth knowing. Alcohol follows its own tax rules even inside the EU. Belgian FPS Finance explains that when a seller in another EU country ships alcohol to a private person in Belgium, Belgian excise duty, a packaging levy, and VAT become due in Belgium.

The steps below keep the parcel inside the EU and the recipient free from customs paperwork.
Your own location does not limit what you can send. The destination, the gift, and the season decide which options appear. Prices on our site show in euros, with a US dollar estimate.
Time zones matter for fast delivery. Walwater Gifts lists an 11:00 CET cutoff for next-working-day express delivery where it is offered. In winter, that is 5:00 AM in New York or Toronto, 10:00 AM in London, and about 9:00 PM in Sydney. North American buyers ordering in the evening should count on one extra day.
For anyone looking to send gift hampers to Belgium from the UK, ordering from an EU shop is the simplest fix for post-Brexit customs. The same logic works when you send gift baskets to Belgium from the USA.
Gift delivery in Belgium from an EU warehouse usually takes a few working days. Couriers deliver Monday to Friday during business hours. Weekends and Belgian public holidays are not delivery days.
Standard delivery does not guarantee a fixed date. Express delivery may be available for many gifts and postcodes. Remote postcodes can take longer or cost more.
Belgian public holidays pause deliveries. Here are the key dates for the coming months, from the Royal Observatory of Belgium:
Saint Nicholas is a big gift moment in Belgium, especially for children. Since it falls on a Sunday this year, aim for delivery by Friday, December 4. For Christmas, order in the first half of December.
A customs-free parcel can still fail if the address is incomplete. Belgian postcodes have four digits. Apartments often use a box number, written “bus” in Dutch or “boîte” in French. Brussels street names may appear in both languages, so use the version your recipient gives you.
Walwater Gifts does not deliver to P.O. boxes. A signature is usually required, so pick an address where an adult will be present during business hours. A work address often works best. For offices, add the company name, department, and floor.
Our team at Walwater Gifts picked six gifts that suit different people and occasions. Availability depends on the destination and selected gift. Adult signature rules may apply to gifts containing alcohol.
The Veuve Clicquot Champagne Gift Basket is built around one of the most recognized Champagne houses. It suits weddings, promotions, anniversaries, and big client wins. Choose it when the moment calls for a toast.

6. Gift Idea

Companies face the same customs problem at a larger scale. Twenty client gifts mailed from the US could mean twenty payment requests landing in Belgian offices. That is not the impression a thank-you gift should make.
Ordering from inside the EU keeps the experience clean for the receiver. Before you order, check each recipient’s gift policy, since some firms and public bodies set value limits or refuse alcohol. An alcohol-free basket is the safest default for mixed teams. Get permission before using employees’ home addresses.
Branded corporate orders generally need one to two weeks of preparation, depending on quantity. Companies can request a VAT invoice. For several addresses, contact us before placing separate orders.
Trusting a European-looking website. Some shops sell in euros but ship from the UK, the US, or Asia. Check the dispatch country.
Marking a shop order as a gift. The private gift allowance does not apply to goods sent by a business. A wrong declaration can delay the parcel.
Assuming alcohol is always tax-free inside the EU. Belgian excise rules still apply to alcohol shipped from another EU country.
Leaving out the box number. Belgian apartment buildings depend on it.
Timing arrival for a weekend. Couriers do not deliver on Saturdays or Sundays.
Walwater Gifts helps customers in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and other countries send personal and corporate gifts to Belgium and other supported European destinations without a customs step for the recipient.
Here is what that means in practice:
If you want to compare options for other countries too, you can send gifts across Europe with Walwater Gifts.
It depends on where the gift ships from. Parcels from outside the EU go through Belgian customs, and the recipient may owe VAT, duty, and a clearance fee. Gifts shipped from another EU country do not pass through customs, so the recipient has nothing to pay at the door.
You can, by ordering from a gift company that ships from inside the EU. A parcel mailed from the USA will clear Belgian customs first. When Walwater Gifts prepares the gift in Slovenia, it travels within the EU and skips the customs step for your recipient.
A gift mailed from the UK does go through Belgian customs. The United Kingdom has been outside the EU customs area since Brexit. bpost lists the UK as an example of a country whose parcels can trigger import costs, even when bought from a European-looking webshop.
The allowance is €45 for occasional gifts sent from one private person to another. Above that value, VAT and fees apply. The allowance does not cover alcohol, perfume, or tobacco, and it does not apply when a shop sends the parcel on your behalf.
Since July 1, 2026, the EU charges a flat customs duty of €3 per item category on low-value parcels under €150 sent to consumers. Before that date, those parcels were duty-free. VAT and clearance fees still apply on top. The rule does not affect gifts shipped within the EU.
bpost lists a customs formalities fee of €21.50 for most parcels valued up to €150 and €40 for parcels above €150. VAT and duties come on top. The fee is waived when the seller has collected VAT at checkout through the EU’s IOSS system.
You can send wine or Champagne to an adult recipient in Belgium. Alcohol has its own tax rules, and Belgian excise applies even to alcohol shipped from another EU country. Adult signature rules may apply. Some offices and hospitals refuse alcohol, so check before ordering.
Walwater Gifts delivers across Belgium, from Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent to Bruges, Leuven, Liège, Namur, and smaller towns. Remote postcodes may take longer or cost more. Check the delivery details shown at checkout for your exact address.
Most gifts shipped from inside the EU reach Belgium within a few working days. Couriers deliver Monday to Friday, and Belgian public holidays do not count. Express delivery may be available if you order before 11:00 CET. Your delivery date is confirmed during checkout.
Place Christmas orders in the first half of December. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and many offices close in the final two weeks of the year. For Saint Nicholas on Sunday, December 6, aim for arrival by Friday, December 4.
Every Walwater Gifts order includes a printed message on a designed greeting card. Type your words at checkout. Keep the message short and sign your name clearly, since the recipient may not expect a parcel from abroad.
A Belgian courier needs the full name, street, house number, box number, four-digit postcode, and town. Add a phone number with the +32 code. P.O. boxes are not accepted, and a signature is usually required, so choose an address where an adult is present.
Tracking is provided after dispatch where available. Once the gift leaves our warehouse, you can follow it through the courier’s system. If tracking shows an address problem, contact our team quickly so we can help the courier complete delivery.
The courier may leave a notice, try a neighbor, or arrange another attempt. Since a signature is usually needed, a work address during business hours is often the safest choice. Tell the recipient to watch for courier messages.
Yes. A company can order from inside the EU so no client receives a customs payment request. Walwater Gifts supports corporate orders for employees, clients, and partners. Branded orders generally need one to two weeks of preparation, and a VAT invoice is available.
Choose a similar gift from the same category or ask our team for a suggestion. Availability depends on the destination and selected gift. If a listed brand runs out, we may use another branded item of equal or greater value so the order ships on time.
You pay online at checkout. Prices display in euros, with a US dollar estimate beside each product. Accepted payment methods appear on the checkout page. Review the full total, including delivery, before confirming.
You can email info@sendgiftsineurope.com or call +386-51-420086 in Europe and +1-269-216-9989 in the US. Contacting us first helps with corporate orders, several addresses, alcohol questions, or tight holiday timing.
