Aachen, Overview
In the tri-border area, it is the westernmost city in Germany, bordering Belgium and the Netherlands to the West. The town is between Maastricht (N.L.) and Liège (B.E.) in the West and Bonn and Cologne in the east. Located in the drainage basin of the Meuse, Aachen is the only larger German city in the Wurm River drainage basin, together with Mönchengladbach. The city of Aachen is the seat of the Aachen City Region (German: Aachen Stadtregion).
History
The Lousberg, Schneeberg, and Königshügel quarries, first excavated during Neolithic times (3000–2500 BC), attest to Aachen’s lengthy occupation, as do recent finds under the modern city’s Elisengarten, which point to a former settlement. For instance, barrows (burial mounds) found on the Klausberg are evidence of Bronze Age settlement (around 1600 BC). The marshy Aachen basin’s hot sulfur springs may have drawn Celtic people to the area during the Iron Age, where they worshipped Grannus, the god of light and healing.
According to legend, Grenus, under Hadrian, founded the 25-hectare Roman spa resort town of Aquae Granni around 124 AD. The fictitious founder appears to be the Celtic god, and the Roman 6th Legion channeled the hot springs at Büchel in the 1st century A.D., followed by the Münstertherme spa, two water pipelines, and a probable Grannus sanctuary at the end of the same century. The two spa complexes were connected by a kind of forum with colonnades. An extensive residential area was also present. Bathhouses were built near Burtscheid by the Romans. Near the modern Kornelimünster/Walheim is a temple precinct called Vernenum. In the Elisenbrunnen and Burtscheid bathhouses, three bathhouses remain, including two fountains.
The Roman civil administration in Aachen eventually collapsed when the baths and other public buildings (along with most villae rusticae of the surrounding countryside) were destroyed around AD 375. Roman coins were last discovered during the reign of Emperor Gratian (AD 375–383). The town remained populated after Rome withdrew its troops. In 470, the city was ruled by the Ripuarian Franks and subordinated to Cologne, their capital.
Etymology
The name Aachen is a modern descendant of southern German Ach(e), which in Old High German means “water” or “stream” and which corresponds etymologically to Latin Aquae, meaning springs. Humans have been visiting the site for over 5,000 years, attracted to the area’s warm mineral springs. Originally named Aquae granny for the Celtic god of healing, Aachen’s Roman name meant “waters of Grannus” or “springs of Grannus.” The word was changed to Aix by Charlemagne in the late 8th century and became Aix-la-Chapelle after he built his palatine chapel there and made it the capital of his empire.
Dialect
Aachen is located on the western end of the Benrath line, which divides High German to the south from the rest of the West Germanic speech area to the north. Aachen’s dialect belongs to the Ripuarian language and is called Oecher Platt.
Geography
Near the tripoint of Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, Aachen is in the middle of the Meuse–Rhine Euroregion. About 6 km (4 miles) from Aachen’s city center is Vaals in the Netherlands. In comparison, Heerlen in the Netherlands and Eupen in the German-speaking Community of Belgium has located about 20 km (12 miles) away. About 30 km (19 mi) north of the High Fens, which form the northern edge of the Eifel uplands of the Rhenish Massif, Aachen lies at the head of the Wurm valley (which today flows through the city canalized), part of the larger basin of the Meuse.
Climate
With a humid climate, mild winters, and warm summers, Aachen and its surrounding area belong to the temperate climate zone (Cfb) at the westernmost point of Germany. As a result of its location north of the Eifel and High Fens and prevailing westerly weather patterns, Aachen experiences comparatively higher rainfall than, for example, Bonn (with 669 mm/year). Due to its geographical location on the northern edge of the Eifel, Aachen is also affected by Foehn winds on southerly air currents.
Geology
The geology of Aachen exhibits a high degree of structural heterogeneity. The oldest rocks surrounding the city are carboniferous sandstone, greywacke, claystone, and limestone. These formations are part of the Rhenish Massif north of the High Fens. Variscan orogeny narrowed and folded these rock layers during the Pennsylvanian subperiod of the Carboniferous geological period. Over the next 200 million years, this area was continuously flattened following this event.
Demographics
As of 31 December 2015, Aachen had 245,885 residents, of whom 118,272 were females, and 127,613 were males.
According to the latest statistics, 9.7 percent of the city’s population is unemployed. Foreign-born residents of Aachen accounted for 13.6% of the city’s total population at the end of 2009. At RWTH Aachen University, a significant percentage of foreign residents are students.
Boroughs
Each city’s seven administrative districts, or boroughs, has its own district council, leader, and authority. Residents of each community elect the councils. Each district is further subdivided into smaller sections for statistical purposes, with each sub-district named with a two-digit number.
Economy
In neighboring northeastern towns, Aachen is the administrative center for coal-mining industries.
Electric goods, fine woolen textiles, food products (chocolate and candy), machinery, rubber products, furniture, metal products, and glass are all manufactured in Aachen. Chemicals, plastics, cosmetics, needles, and pins are also produced in and around Aachen. There have been several spin-offs from the university’s I.T. technology department, despite glassware and textile production once representing more than 10% of the city’s manufacturing jobs.
Sports
CHIO (short for Concours Hippique International Officiel) is the largest equestrian event in the world and is considered by horse riders to be as prestigious as Wimbledon for equitation. 2006 was the host city of the FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen.
After its promotion to Germany’s first division in 2006, Alemannia Aachen spent a short time in that division. However, they could not maintain their status and are now back in the fourth division. It was known for its incomparable atmosphere throughout the second division for its stadium, “Tivoli,” which opened in 1928. Until the old stadium was demolished in 2011, it was used by amateurs, while the Bundesliga Club played at the nearby “Neuer Tivoli” stadium. The construction of the stadium, which has a capacity of 32,960, began in May 2008 and was completed at the beginning of 2009.
The Ladies in Black women’s volleyball team has played in the German volleyball league (DVL) since 2008 (part of the PTSV Aachen sports club).
There was a promotion to the first regional league for local basketball club B.G. Aachen e.V in June 2022.
Transport
- Rail – The Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) in Aachen was built in 1841 for the Cologne-Aachen railway line.
- Intercity bus stations – Aachen has two intercity bus stations: Aachen West Station, located northwest of the city, and Aachen Wilmersdorfer Straße, located northeast.
- Public transport – In December 1880, Aachen opened its first horse tramline. As a result of electrification in 1895, the tram network reached a maximum length of 213.5 kilometers in 1915, making it the fourth-longest tram network in Germany.
- Roads – There are three autobahns in Aachen: the A4 (west-east), A44 (north-south), and A544 (a smaller motorway from the A4 to the Europaplatz in the city center). Traffic jams at the Aachen road interchange are planned to be eliminated.
- Airport – Aachen Maastricht Airport is the main airport of Aachen and Maastricht. It can be found about 15 nautical miles (28 kilometers; 17 miles) northwest of Aachen. Between Aachen and the airport, there is a shuttle service.
