East Flanders province includes Aalst, a city and municipality on the Dender River 31 kilometers northwest of Brussels. Aalst and the villages of Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel, and Nieuwerkerken make up the municipality.
Aalst was first recorded in the 9th Century as the villa Alost, a dependency of the Abbey of Lobbes. At this strategic point, where the road from Bruges to Cologne crossed the Dender, a town and port grew during the Middle Ages. The city was considered the capital of Flanders while it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was transferred to the Countship of Imperial Flanders in 1046 and absorbed a portion of Brabant before being united with the remainder of the province in 1173. Despite its border location on the Holy Roman Empire’s border, the town maintained some independence. The city’s white and red coat of arms and the colors of Lotharingia symbolize the city’s relationship with Brabant.
In the middle of the 12th Century, construction of the town hall began, making it the oldest surviving town hall in Belgium. The town archives still contain several manuscripts from this period. The town of Aalst supported Louis de Male against Philip van Artevelde during the Hundred Years War and sent troops to the victorious Battle of Roosevelt. In 1360, the town hall and the city itself were almost entirely destroyed by fire. During the 15th Century, the town was rebuilt, and a new belfry was built in Gothic style. During this time, the city was dominated by the influential weavers’ guild, which brought great prosperity to the town. Dirk Martens, a local citizen, founded the Southern Netherlands’ first printing shop in 1473, publishing books by Christopher Columbus and other authors then. He later became a professor at the Old University of Leuven and was buried there in Saint Martin’s Church (Aalst).
Partly due to the French occupation, the textile industry is still vibrant in Aalst. Textiles, clothing, and footwear are manufactured in Aalst and by many of the machines required. Old breweries in rural areas sell hops produced there to the more rural regions. In addition, they have an active cut flower business in the place.
Every year before Lent, Aalst celebrates its carnival festivities. During this celebration, the former town hall belfry is used for “throwing off the onions.”
Aalst has several professional teams:
approximately 77,000 people.
Summers in Aalst are comfortable and partly cloudy, while winters are freezing, windy, and mostly cloudy. During the year, the temperature ranges between 34°F and 74°F, rarely falling below 22°F or rising above 84°F. Aalst is best visited from late June to early September if you want to enjoy warm-weather activities.

Aalst’s Station was built and opened in 1853 but has been closed since 1957. According to the architect, JP Cluysenaer, the building was inspired by the Amsterdam buildings and looked more like a fortress than a train station.
Built in the 16th Century, this beautiful castle earned the nickname “The Damned Castle” because of its proximity to the city’s gallows. The town of Aalst now owns the court and is used as an office building.
On the Grote Markt, this impressive 17th Century building houses a trendy and classy restaurant. Take in the building’s grandeur during daylight, then return for dinner in the evening.
It is a former city hall and one of the oldest buildings in Belgian and Dutch history. You will find the Latin words’ NEC spe, NEC metu’ on the tower, which translates to “not with hope, not with fear.” Spain’s King Phillip II adopted this motto as his motto.
This impressive church was built in 1480 but was never completed to its original design. A nearby Ghent attack prompted the construction of the church, which was most recently renovated in 2007.
This church is located on Pont Street and is recognizable by its Baroque facade. There are 23 Jesuit graves in the church’s crypt, which is the church’s most fascinating feature.
