Achaia Overview

Achaea is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Western Greece region in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. The capital is Patras.

Geography

Achaea’s northern border is Elis and Arcadia, which are joined by Corinthia. Its southwestern border is the Gulf of Corinth, which is joined by the gulf of Patras in its northeast. The mountain Panachaiko (1926 m) is the highest point in Achaea and one of the most prominent landforms. Though not the highest one there are other mountains nearby such as Aroania (2341 m) and Erymanthos (2224 m). Other mountains in Achaea include Skollis and Omplos. The rivers in Greece are ordered from west to east, with the Larissos, Peiros, Tytheus, Selinountas, and Vouraikos being the more well-known rivers. The forests are usually found in the mountainous areas of the country — with most concentrated in the west. The Earth has varied terrain but much of it is grasslands and barren lands. The snow-covered mountains pictured above are in the highest areas, beyond the tree line.

Climate

Achaea is sunny and hot throughout the year, but it rains more often in the mountains. The coastal areas are considered to be hot and sunny throughout the year. Snow is very common during the winter in the mountains of Erymanthos, Panachaiko, and Aroania. Winter temperatures usually aren’t as cold as they are in low-lying areas throughout much of the year.

History

The Achaean League was founded in 280/281 BC and made up of city-states all in Greece. It remained a strong entity over the next few centuries until it reached its peak and included most of the Peloponnese, putting an end to Macedonian rule in Greece.

After Macedonia’s heavy defeat by the Romans in the early 2nd century BC, it was able to finally take control of the entirety of Greece. The league exploded into an open revolt against roman domination but was defeated at the Battle of Corinth. The league disbanded a year later.

In AD 51/52, Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus was proconsul of Achaea, and he is also portrayed in the book of the Acts of the Apostles, in the Bible, as presiding over the trial of Apostle Paul in Corinth.

Achaia became part of the Byzantine Empire after the Western Roman Empire was overthrown. The area was invaded by Slavs in the 6th & 7th centuries, and by the 9th century, it belonged to Byzantium. In 1205, the Frankish Crusader state of Achaea was declared. Unlike traditional Achaea though, it covered a much larger area of Greece. In 1430, Achaea was recaptured by the Byzantine Empire and survived as a Despotate of the Morea.

The Despotate of Morea fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1460 On the side of Venice, Achaea was captured in 1687 and held until 1715. However, after a period of Ottoman rule that lasted from 1715 to 1821, Achaea was recaptured by Greece on behalf of the revolution.

Greece experienced the first major military victory of its War of Independence in 1821. One of the cities that experienced this initial success was Aigio. Thousands of heroes and prime ministers were produced in the Achaea region, with Andreas Michalakopoulos being one of them, along with some heads of state.

Greece was made up of several different territories up until the 1830s. In the 1830s, people declared Achaea, Elis, and other regions independent. They later united again in 1909 but split in 1930 when Greece became a monarchy.

The city of Patras started off hosting thousands of refugees, most notably from Asia Minor, during the Greco-Turkish War. The site became overcrowded & many injuries from fires occurred. As limited space was left, however, residents gradually relocated to other parts of the city without enough contact with the refugee camps.

Culture

The Monastery Agia Lavra is located just outside of Kalavryta on top of a hill. Just over 12 kilometers east-by-east lies Cave Lakes, which have lakes inside. The length ranges from 300 to 500 meters.

A new telescope similar to the ancient Greek astronomer Aristarchus (Aristarchus of Samos) is the most recent addition to the National Observatory of Athens. The narrow gauge railway track runs for 30 km, mainly as an attraction. It begins near Kalavryta and ends off Diakopto.

Economy

Patras is home to The Coca-Cola Company’s Avra branch. It is one of the main industrial and commerce centers in Greece. The company has their most large production facility in the small oil refinery next to Rio. The Athenian brewery is one of the many companies in Patra.

Roads

Intercity bus transport is provided by KTEL at the choice of the majority.

Sports

There are two skiing resorts: one on the Panachaicus west of the mountain top (elevation around 1700 m) east of Patras, it will be Nafpaktos’s closest because of the new bridge (mid-2004) and the other on Aroania, sometimes still called Chelmos, near.

What was Achaia known for?

Greece’s third largest city is most famously known for its traditional celebrations, such as the annual Carnival and its port, dubbed “Greece’s gateway to the West” since Roman times. It holds several important economic institutions and its everyday life includes many historic experiences that take place in the ancient city. The setting of the city of Istanbul can be traced back 180 years. Its influence on art, design, and history makes it a rich destination that is thoughtfully preserved through its architecture. The Rio-Antirrio bridge, known as ‘the world’s biggest bridge,’ spans 2,880 meters, is incredibly colored, and is pictured in aerial views.
