Alba Iulia Overview

Romania’s Alba Iulia County is seated in the city, which is located in the west-central region. With a population of 63,536 (as of 2011), it is located on the Mureș River in the historical part of Transylvania.

Apulum was the Roman camp at this site during ancient times. The city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Transylvania since the High Middle Ages. From 1526 to 1570, it was the capital of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom, from which the Principality of Transylvania emerged by the Treaty of Speyer in 1570. Additionally, it was a center of the Eastern Orthodox Metropolitan of Transylvania with a suffragan to the Diocese of Vad. In 1922, the Romanian King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie were crowned in the Alba Iulia Orthodox Cathedral in celebration of the Union of Transylvania with Romania on 1 December 1918.

Names

According to Ptolemy, the settlement was called Apulum during the Roman period (from the Dacian Apollon). A Slavic population may have lived in the territory when Roman ruins became the seat of a dukedom in the 10th century. The settlement bore the Slavic name of Belgrade (meaning “white castle” or “white town”) from the 9th to 11th centuries. In Romanian, the town was called Bălgrad, which originated from Slavic.

The Hungarian name Gyulafehérvár is a translation of the older Slavic form that means “white castle of Gyula” or “white city of Julius.” Its current name, Alba Iulia, is a Romanian translation. Gyula II, a Hungarian warlord baptized in Constantinople in the 10th century, is called Iulia (“Julius”) in Romanian.

History

It lies near the site of the Dacian political, economic, and social center of Apulon, mentioned by the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy and thought by some archaeologists to be the Dacian fortifications on top of Piatra Craivii. Following Dacia’s integration into the Roman Empire, Apulum was established as the capital city of Dacia Apulensis. Roman Dacia’s largest city was Apulum, home to the XIII Gemina Legion. The largest castrum in Romania is Apulum, located on 37.5 hectares (93 acres) (750 x 500 m2).

Hungarian regent Jula or Geula-the maternal grandfather of Stephen I of Hungary and lord [regent] of Transylvania-built the capital of his dukedom there during the 10th century, according to the Gesta Hungarorum. Transylvania’s first church was built in Alba Iulia around 950 by Geula, a Byzantine baptized in the Byzantine Empire. 2011 was the year that the ruins of an ancient church were discovered. Ioan Aurel Pop, among other historians, states that Hierotheos, the first bishop of Transylvania, accompanied Geula to Hungary after he was baptized in Constantinople around 950.

According to recent archaeological discoveries, the first cathedral was built in the 11th century after Stephen I converted to Catholicism and established the Catholic Transylvanian bishopric. Present-day Catholic cathedral dates from the 12th or 13th century. The citadel was used by John Hunyadi, Voivode of Transylvania, for preparations for the battle with the Ottoman Turks in 1442. A significant expansion of the cathedral occurred during his reign, and he was buried there after his death.

The autonomous Principality of Transylvania was created in 1542 after the partition of the Kingdom of Hungary. Alba Iulia became its capital in 1542 and remained as such until 1690. Weissenburg was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Weissenburg in 1551. In the reign of Prince Gábor Bethlen, the city reached a high point in its cultural history by establishing an academy. In the former Ottoman Turkish Empire, the name Erdel Belgrad or Belgrad-Erdel (“Belgrad of Transylvania” in English) is used to avoid confusion with Belgrat and Arnavut Belgrad (“Albanian Belgrad” in Turkish, the early name of Berat during the Ottoman period).

Climate

Alba Iulia’s summers are warm, its winters are freezing and snowy, and there are partly cloudy days throughout the year. The annual average temperature ranges between 23°F and 82°F, with temperatures rarely dropping below 7°F or exceeding 91°F. During the summer months of June and September, Alba Iulia is an excellent place for warm-weather activities.
