Alcalá de Guadaíra is located approximately 17 km southeast of Seville, Spain. As Seville has grown, Alcalá has become a suburb. Alcalá used to be known as Alcalá de los Panaderos (Alcalá of the Bakers) since it provided most of Seville’s bread. The town is located on the banks of the Guadaíra River, where Moorish watermills are still found.
The central Turdetan city of the Guadara basin, Irippo, was located at Mesa de Gandul (Alcalá de Guadara). Alcalá has remained unchanged since Muslim forces conquered the site in the 8th century. Throughout Spain, many places have been named Alcalá, which comes from the Arabic al-qala, which means fortification or citadel.
Alcalá de Guadaíra was ruled by several Muslim kingdoms from the Umayyad Caliphate in 756 until 1244. The Almohads constructed extensive fortifications on a promontory overlooking the river, and fortifications continue dominating the town’s southwest side. Ferdinand III of Castile refurbished a castle and city fortifications after Alcala de Guadara was captured by him in 1244. The court served as a royal prison with a military presence after being sacked by Ferdinand III. After Ferdinand’s death, the prison became disrepair and ceased to function as a prison or military barracks.
In Alcalá, there was a small but significant Jewish community. During December 1390, Archdeacon Ferrand Martinez led a mob that razed the synagogue to the ground. Soon after, members of the Jewish community were put to death.
The priest and historian Leandro José de Flores (1776-1839) was born in this town.
There is no doubt that Alcalá de Guadara is an industrial town. Its industrial heritage began with the Moorish construction of watermills along the River Guadaíra. The mills ground grain to make flour supplied to bakeries in the area. Alcalá’s reputation as Seville’s “bread basket” developed over the centuries. A second historical industry was the processing of olives. Up to 12 olive processing factories operated in Alcalá in the early 20th century, employing thousands of workers, mainly women, who prepared the cured olives for sale. During the last few decades, these industries have declined, but they have been replaced by a wide variety of modern light and heavy industries on the numerous industrial estates in the north and west. There is employment in the town not only for locals but also for residents of the surrounding cities.
Alcalá enjoys a Mediterranean climate in southern Spain characterized by mild winters and hot, dry summers. There is an elevation difference between the town and Seville, and this area is referred to as Los Alcores, and Alcalá is the area’s most significant urban development.
The River Guadaíra runs through the town and has carved out some steep valleys with low cliffs. Watersheds on both sides of the upper river run east and southeast in the city. After passing through town, it joins the Guadalquivir south of Seville. By-products of olive processing and other waste have been dumped directly into the river for many years, contaminating the river heavily. It is not uncommon for the river in winter to be full of foam and smell unpleasant. The river’s banks are well-covered with trees and vegetation, making it a haven for wildlife. When the dam was built in 1930 along the Guadalquivir River, where it passes Alcalá del Rio, it was a major spawning reservoir for European Sturgeon (Acipenser sturio), supporting a thriving fishery and caviar industry. Among the town’s beltways has become the only figurative bridge in Europe, the Dragon Bridge, which was inaugurated on 28 March 2007.
Oromana is an extensive stone pine woodland on the southern side of the river.
The A-92 motorway runs east-west through the northern part of the town, and the A-392 road runs from north to south. As of 2020, the Metrometropolitana de Alcalá de Guadara is not yet open, and construction began in 2007 and is expected to be completed by 2020.
