Alcala de Henares Overview

It is a city in the Community of Madrid that belongs to the Spanish region of Alcalá de Henares. There are 31 kilometers (19 miles) between the center of Madrid and this town, spanning the Henares River. According to the latest statistics for 2018, it has a population of 193,751, making it the third-most populous municipality in the region.

The city originates from the Complutum settlement founded in Roman times on the right bank (north) of the river, which became a bishopric seat in the 5th century, which predated earlier settlements (oppida) on the left bank. The left bank was home to one of the several Muslim citadels in al-Andalus, hence the name Alcalá, which derives from the Arabic word for citadel. After the Christian conquest culminated circa 1118, most of the city’s nucleus returned to the right bank. Alcalá de Henares was a seigneurial estate of the archbishops of Toledo for much of the late middle ages and the early modern period before becoming part of the province of Madrid.

Name

Locally, it is simply Alcalá, but de Henares (‘of the river Henares’) is added to distinguish it from a dozen Spanish cities with the same name (derived from the Arabic word al-qalʿa, for fortification or citadel, typically a castle).

This species is known by its Latin name, Complutum, which means “confluence” because rivers’ water (or rainwater) flows into one place (a compluvium).

History

Since the Chalcolithic period of the Bronze Age, the city boundaries have been inhabited. During the 1st century B.C., the Romans conquered the area and built the town of Complutum near an earlier Carpetanian settlement, Iplacea. In addition to having its governing institutions, it had 10,000 residents, making it a municipium. Due to its location on the Roman road that connected Emerita Augusta to Caesaraugusta, it played a vital role in Roman history. When the Roman Empire fell under the Visigoths, it declined, although it became a pilgrimage destination in memory of Saints Justo and Pastor.

In 711, the Moors subdued Visigothic city. They founded another site called Alcalá la Vieja (Old Alcalá), which means “citadel” in Arabic—due to an injunction from Castile, the Archbishop of Toledo, Bernard de Sedirac, conquered it on 3 May 1118.

On 10 February 1129, Alfonso VII gave Alcalá to Raymond de Sauvetât, also Archbishop of Toledo, becoming an archiepiscopal property for centuries. A charter with an old date of 1135 was granted to the town by Raymond.

The Muslims abandoned the Muslim borough in favor of the Burgo de Santiuste (“Saint Just’s borough”) on the original Roman site.

There was a renowned marketplace and a Jewish and a Moorish quarter in the town when it was under Christian rule until the end of the Reconquista. Due to its central location, it often served as a residence for the Kings of Castile while they traveled south.

In the 1480s, Christopher Columbus met Reyes Católicos, King Ferdinand II of Aragon, and Queen Isabella I of Castile, who funded the Discovery of America.

In 1509, Cardinal Cisneros granted the town a new jurisdiction.

Location

On the southern half of the Inner Plateau, Alcalá de Henares can be found in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. A left-bank tributary of the Henares flows into the Jarama, which is, in turn, a right-bank tributary of the Tagus. The river’s right (north) bank (on which the current urban nucleus was built) displays a very flat relief with quaternary fluvial terraces. In contrast, the left (southern) bank features a very steep slope of clays from the Miocene, rapidly rising to the moors of La Alcarria.

Despite its altitude of 654 meters and 88 square kilometers, the city was for a long time confined between the Henares River to the south and the Madrid-Barcelona railway to the north. As the population grew, however, the urbanized area expanded to the space between the railway and the A-2 motorway.

Climate

In central Spain, the climate is semi-arid, with winters cold and wet and hot and hot and dry summers. An average temperature of 14 °C (57 °F) is observed throughout the year. Spring and autumn bring the most rain, about an average of 300 millimeters (11.8 inches). December and January have temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), while July and August have temperatures over 40 °C (104 °F). The summer dry season coincides with the summer heat wave.

Transport

Due to its excellent transport connections with Madrid, Alcalá has become a commuter town, with many of its residents working in the capital. By Cercanias (railway), Alcalá de Henares can reach Madrid in 35 minutes or Guadalajara in 25 minutes. There is also the CIVIS direct train, which makes the journey 20 minutes during peak hours. Several towns and villages are nearby and are accessible by bus from Madrid, Guadalajara, and other nearby cities. With the nearby A-2, a highway that starts in Madrid and continues to Barcelona and France, Alcalá de Henares is well connected to the state road network.

Alcalá also has an intensive bus system, “Alcalá-Bus,” which runs to all the central neighborhoods and costs 1.30 euros.

Festivals

The city of Alcalá celebrates a “White Night” every year. Residents of Alcalá celebrate Alcalá’s rich cultural heritage through music, art, theatre, and dance during this festival. During the festival, stages are set up around the Plaza de Cervantes, where performances occur well into the night.
