Alessandria Overview
As the capital of the Province of Alessandria, Alessandria is a city and comune in Piedmont, Italy. About 90 kilometers east of Turin, the city lies on an alluvial plain between the Tanaro and Bormida rivers. Besides being a central rail hub, Alessandria is also an important port.
History
As a free commune founded in 1168, Alessandria served as a stronghold for the Lombard League, defending the liberties of northern Italian communes against the Imperial forces of Frederick Barbarossa. It was built on a preexisting urban nucleus. In 1174-1175, the fortress was sorely tested by the Imperial siege and stood fast against the Emperor’s opponent, Pope Alexander III, who was a staunch ally of the Emperor. Umberto Eco’s Baudolino (which recalls a legend about Bishop Herculanus defending Perugia several centuries earlier) says a quick-witted peasant, Gagliaudo, saved the city by feeding his cow with the last grain remaining inside the city, then taking it outside until he reached the Imperial camp. He was captured here, and his cow was cut open for cooking: when the Imperials found the cow’s stomach full of grain, they asked Gagliaudo why he wasted so much food. According to him, he was forced to feed his cow grain because there was not enough room to store it within the city. Fearing the siege would last too long. The Emperor left Alessandria free (malaria was probably the real reason). In the left corner of the Cathedral, you will find a statue of Gagliaudo.
There were jealous conflicts between Alessandria and the region’s older communes, particularly Asti.
Alessandria passed into the hands of the Visconti in 1348 and then to the Sforza, following Milan’s career until 1707, when it was ceded to the House of Savoy and became part of Piedmont. New Cittadellas were being built on the left side of the Tanaro river, across from the city, as evidence of the new dominance.
Alessandria became the capital of the Napoleonic Département of Marengo after Napoleon’s victory at the Battle of Marengo (1800). Another substantial fort was built north of the city, containing impressive and influential barracks still used as military headquarters and stores today. Two other forts have been destroyed by a railway (Forte ferrovia) south of the city (Cristo quarter); a third remains in the middle of the same quarter (Forte Acqui).
