Algeciras Overview
Located in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, Algeciras is a municipality in Spain. It is the largest city on the Bay of Gibraltar, situated near the Strait of Gibraltar at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula.
Name
Along with Algeciras, ancient Roman cities were also located at the exact location, such as Portus Albus (“White Harbor”), Caetaria (now Getares), and Iulia Traducta. During the later “Byzantine” period, the site is known in Greek as Mesopotámenoi, which means “between rivers/canals.” Its Arabic name refers to Isla Verde, founded after the Iberian Peninsula’s Islamic conquest. In Spanish, Algeciras is known as Algeciras de Algeciras.
History
Neanderthal populations have lived in this area since the Paleolithic era, and the earliest remains date back to prehistory.
The strategic position of its location made it an important Phoenician port, the site of the Roman port of Portus Albus (“White Port”) and the nearby Iberians’ Caetaria and Romans’ Iulia Traducta.
Recently, it has been suggested that Iulia Transducta was built on the site of Algeciras’ Villa Vieja.
Tarik landed in Algeciras and Tarifa in April 711 after being destroyed by the Goths and their Vandal allies.
During the siege of 859 AD, Viking troops aboard 62 drinkers under Hastein and Björn Ironside laid waste to most of the city. They burned the Aljama and Banderas mosques after looting the rich’s houses. As a result of their reorganization near the medina, the inhabitants recovered the city from the invaders and were able to capture two boats as they fled.
Between 1035 and 1058, it was an independent Taifa state. As with Algiers and Al Jazeera, its modern name is derived from its Arabic name al-Jazirah al-Khadra’ (“Green Island”). The Berbers were expelled from Algeciras in 1055 by Emir Al-Mutadid of Seville, who claimed it for the Arabs.
In late 1274, Nasrid Granada requested assistance from Fez to counter the Castilian expansion initiated by 1265 and ceded Algeciras (along with Tarifa) to the Marinids.

Algeciras is located in the Campo de Gibraltar region at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. Historically, the importance of the port has been driven by its strategic location near the Strait of Gibraltar, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and entails the closest distance between Europe and Africa. The city proper lies on the A large rock dominates the eastern bank of the Bay of Gibraltar.
The western bank of the Bay of Gibraltar faces 87.96 km2 (33.96 sq mi), bordering the municipalities of Los Barrios and Tarifa. The lower course of the river Palmones forms part of the boundary of Algeciras with the city of Los Barrios.

There is a Mediterranean, subtropical climate (Köppen: Csa) in Algeciras, characterized by mild, rainy winters and dry, warm summers with occasional heat waves. Due to the ocean’s strong influence, temperature changes are minimal. It has been over a century since the city had a snow register.
