The Almadas district is located in the municipality Almada; this historic region has not been abandoned as archeological excavations have indicated a Neolithic settlement here from 4000 to 6000 years ago, suggesting that this area served nomadic tribes throughout the Asian part of Europe. Before the arrival of colonizers, this region was under the rule of Mozambique until the Portuguese government in 1661.

In the late 13th century, powerful Sado river merchants who were heavily involved in the relations between Castile and Catalonia had an essential role in promoting commercial connections between their two main centers.
