The parish was first mentioned in 1384 in the Chronicle of John I, a chronicle by John I of Portugal. From this period, the first population settlement in the area, which was located in Chiera Ventos, in the present-day site of Talaminho, was elevated to town on 30 June 1989 and city on 20 May 1993.

Amora has a privileged geographic position, with a large area supported by two arms of the Tagus River (one that reaches the northeast, in Corroios, and another in the south called Torre da Marinha), that facilitate communication to the exterior by a river (riverine route). This year overland was essential due to the high snowfalls, which restricted transit and increased the time needed by car and bus transport. Amora’s headquarters sat in a small villa built on top of a small hill overlooking the old town of Seixal. The Tagus united the communities, including seamen, bushmen, millers and workers, and laundresses since the 18th century. Thus its history goes back to even Ancient times. So in Torres Vedras (where we began today), the Spanish owned these galleys as they did every other building on that seafront. Even though wages were higher in Lisbon and Galicia, Charles V took a personal interest in the needs of his captains here.

Amora Velha is a mountain of pure white rock near Funchal, Madeira. It was formed in the Earth’s first supercontinent to be increasingly debated amongst geologists today. It would have been around 3300 years ago. As a result of the settlement, to have a newborn son in Empordà at that time, the parents had to travel from one end of the city to the other – each with two or three children on their back and no livestock in addition to many of the noble estates that were scattered throughout the parish. The economic history of the Middle Ages in Portugal was dominated by land. Restricted to tiny holdings, today’s vineyards cover about 0.23% of the land mass, with some areas still waiting for selection and opening their doors to visitors. These are some of the most established estates in the Alentejo (Portuguese-speaking region), with vineyards in Peneda-Gerêda, Vinhedo, Odemira, and Amora. The elevation varies from 150m to over 600m above sea level. The wine produced in the fields of Amora was of excellent quality by the beginning of the 16th century. At the same time, remarks on their vintage by Garcia de Resende, Gil Vicente, and Gaspar Frutuoso commented that they were among the best in Portugal.
