Ancona Overview

Located on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Ancona is the capital of the Marche region. Passetto Beach and the hilltop Cathedral of San Ciriaco are its most popular attractions. Fontana del Calamo is a fountain with bronze masks of mythical figures in the city’s center. There is also the ancient Arch of Trajan and the Lazzaretto, or Mole Vanvitelliana, a pentagonal quarantine station from the 18th century.

Contemporary history

On 29 September 1860, eleven days after he was defeated at Castelfidardo, Christophe Léon Louis Juchault de Lamoricière surrendered at Ancona to the Kingdom of Italy.

As of 23 May 1915, Italy had joined the Entente Powers and entered World War I. Following Italy’s entry into the war in 1915, the battleship division of the Austro-Hungarian Navy bombarded all installations extensively, causing significant damage and killing several dozen people. Ancona played a crucial role in the conflict as one of the most important Italian ports on the Adriatic Sea during World War I.

Free Polish forces were serving as part of the British Army during World War II when the Polish 2nd Corps captured the city from Nazi German forces. During the battle of Ancona, the Poles captured the town on 18 July 1944, a month after they were assigned to capture it on 16 June 1944. To shorten the lines of communication for the advance into northern Italy, the attack was part of an Allied operation to gain access to a seaport closer to the Gothic Line.

Jewish history

Jews began to live in Ancona in 967 A.D. Jacob of Ancona, a Jewish resident of Ancona, traveled to China four years before Marco Polo and wrote “The City of Lights” about his experiences. Due to the city’s importance and its position as a center of trade with the Levant, the Jewish community of Ancona grew steadily from 1300 onwards. Immanuel the Roman, a Jewish poet, attempted to lower the high taxes taken from the Jewish community because of persecution in their homeland and the importance of Ancona Jews in the trade and banking industry, Jews from Germany, Spain, Sicily, and Portugal immigrated to Ancona over the next 200 years. Ancona became a trade center due to the pro-Jewish attitude toward Ancona Jews. Ancona’s Jewish population was about 2700 in 1550.

As part of his Papal Bull of 1555, Pope Paul IV forced the city’s Crypto-Jewish community to convert to Christianity. The others, however, refused to do so and were then hanged and burned. Jewish merchants boycotted Ancona for a short period in response, and Dona Gracia Mendes Nasi led the boycott.

Climate

Ancona is a humid subtropical city with a Köppen climate classification of Cfa, and it is located between the Mediterranean and more continental regions. During the most intense cold waves, temperatures can drop -10 °C (14 °F) below outside the city center.

Demographics

Ancona had 101,480 residents in 2007 (the greater area has a population of more than four times its size), located in the province of Ancona, Marches, of whom 47.6% were males, and 52.4% were females. Minors (children under 18) accounted for 15.54 percent of the population, while pensioners accounted for 24.06 percent.
