There are several theories about Andria’s origins. There is a mention of it in 915 as a “Casale” (“hamlet”) based on Trani. Around 1046, the Norman count Peter expanded and fortified the settlements in the area (including also Barletta, Corato, and Bisceglie).

A Duchy was established in Andria during the Angevin period in the 14th century. It was besieged by German and Lombard mercenaries of the Hungarian army in 1350 and by Queen Joan I’s troops in 1370. Saint Richard of Andria, the current patron saint, was discovered in 1431 by the ruler of Andria, Francesco II Del Balzo, who instituted the Fair of Andria (23-30 April). It was acquired by the Aragonese in 1487 and passed to Frederick IV of Naples in the following year. Fabrizio Carafa purchased it for 100,000 ducats from the Spanish later in 1552.

French troops captured the city after a long siege in 1799, after which the Carafas ruled the town for many years. Andria was a protagonist of the Risorgimento after the Bourbon restoration and the brigandage era after the unification of Italy.

Castle del Monte

A stunning symmetrical castle in Andria, one of Italy’s most famous. There is no doubt that Castle del Monte is one of the most beautiful castles ever built, and it features an octagonal shape with eight identical octagonal guard towers.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

Originally built in the 12th century, this structure is the city’s most important place of worship. Its front façade is adorned with a large rose window, and an ornate metal grill covering encloses its main entrance in the 14th century.

Basilica Santa Maria dei Miracoli

Another fine example of Italian architecture and design, this basilica is situated in the Piazza San Pio X. It has magnificent interior decoration and an impressive façade and exterior.

Porta Sant’Andrea

Some once impressive defenses and gateways barred access to the city center of Andria. As a result of its proximity to this saint’s original church, this magnificent structure has been given its name.

Piazza Catuma

A unique square in Andria, the Piazza Catuma is one of the main squares. A large circular area in the center of the court has diagonal cross patterns.

Andria is located in an area of Italy full of ancient ruins and remains of once-important Roman cities. San Leucio Archaeological Park is one such site.

This public park surrounds the impressive Ulivi Stadium in northwestern Andria. It connects the Via Achille Grandi and the stadium through a large paved walkway with beautiful trees.

St. Michael’s Cave is located in the small town of Minervino Murge. You enter the cave through a small church building and climb several steps to reach the main cavern.
