Antwerp Overview
Antwerp is a port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with a history dating to the Middle Ages. The central square in Antwerp consists of architectural buildings from the Flemish Renaissance that are just as impressive as diamonds. Antwerp is located on the River Scheldt, which flows into the North Sea. It is approximately 40 kilometers north and 15 kilometers south of Brussels, separated by Belgium’s Dutch border. Antwerp is one of the top 20 largest ports in the world and has also earned a name for being home to some of the largest diamonds in the world. Antwerp’s importance dates back to the year 1576 when it was invaded by the Spanish and ruled by the Duke of Alba. Later, during the Dutch Revolt, it became an important city again. Antwerp, which was established in 1531, is the world’s first purpose-built stock exchange. It preceded the idea of stocks and shares that would lead to modern-day financial markets and business practices.
The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren (Dutch pronunciation: [sɪˈɲoːrə(n)]), after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, “lord”, which comes from the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. The city hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics and some others.
Origin of the name
Ando Verpia’s name was found in ancient coins from the year 275 and is thought to have meant ‘new town’ or ‘fresh settlement.’ Andoverpis is a Celtic or Old Irish name of unknown etymology that appears in Vita Eligii’s story, and it may be related to the hippopotamus.
The Germanic origin of “antithesis” can be traced back to the word werpen, which means “to throw,” and a verb that is derived from “an alluvial deposit.” Andoverpis could have been a combination of different words. It could have come from “those who live on both banks,” or perhaps it means something else entirely – but the meaning is left up to you.
Antwerpen is named after the city’s founder and takes on a Dutch suffix. Based on legend, Antigoon was a giant who originally lived near the Scheldt River and extracted tax from passing boatmen. Later on, a young hero by the name of Silvius Brabo killed one of these giants. He severed his hand and threw it in the river before he killed him. The statue of a woman near the Grote Markt square claims that this was not the true origin, even though it is still celebrated in the city today.

Port
The port of Antwerp has seen tremendous growth in the past decade, with 235 million tons of cargo being handled in 2018. It is the eighteenth largest port worldwide. It handles high-volume cargo like general goods and bulk project cargo, as well as offsetting petrochemical industries in Antwerp’s docklands. electricity generation is an essential part of industries in Belgium, with four nuclear power plants at Doel, a conventional power station in Kallo, and several smaller combined cycle plants. There is a wind farm in the northern part of the port area. Antwerp is a diamond district in Belgium where the industry is really important. It brings in 85% of the world’s rough diamonds and had an annual turnover of $56 billion in 2011. In fact, over the past two decades, Indian and; Lebanese traders on behalf of their country’s government have become much more prominent. Antwerp World Diamond Centre, the successor to the Hoge Raad Voor Diamant, is well-known for regulating professional standards and ethics in the diamond industry. They also offer training and promote Antwerp as the capital of this industry. However, Antwerp has seen a downturn in its diamond industry lately with international companies buying up their own production and switching to cheaper labor markets such as Dubai or India.
Road
Antwerp has a six-lane motorway that circles the city center. It connects to Brussels, Hasselt and Liège, Ghent, Lille and Bruges and Breda and Berg. The three road tunnels that carry traffic under the Scheldt are all connected in order of construction: the Waasland tunnel (1934), the Liefkenshoek Tunnel (1991), and finally, the Kennedy tunnel (1967).
The need for a fourth high-volume highway link called the “Oosterweel connection” was proposed to alleviate traffic and congestion on the Ring. It would have entailed the construction of a long viaduct and bridge (the Lange Wapper) over the docks on the north side of the city in combination with the widening of the existing motorway into a 14-lane motorway; these plans were eventually rejected.
In September 2010, Flanders’ government made the decision to replace a bridge with a tunnel instead. Some people suggest covering the Ring, but others argue that this would make it harder for people who don’t have cars. This would reconnect the city with its suburbs, provide development opportunities and alleviate pollution and noise generated. Antwerp never got the R2 underground line connecting Antwerp to Deurne and Brussels. A plan to build an old-fashioned R2 outer road, that would have been outside the urban area, was never carried out.
Rail
Lines from Antwerp to other cities in Belgium include Essen, Turnhout, Mechelen, Brussels, and Charleroi. From Belgium’s northeast to its southwest are considered part of Antwerp’s “outer ring”. Amsterdam and Paris are served by international trains while other destinations only have national trains. Traveling from London to Brussels is likely to be most affected by changes.
Antwerp Central station is an architectural monument in its own right. It’s mentioned in W G Sebald‘s haunting novel Austerlitz and was completed in 2006. The previous year, a tunnel to emerge at the old Antwerp Dam station was built under the city center. Brussels to Netherlands trains had to either make a U-turn at Central Station or call only at Berchem. This meant they would enter the station 2km to the south and then take a left and come back north before continuing east. Now, with the new technology that has been implemented at this station, they can call from the old level all the way to that same destination.
As a city and as Belgium’s largest classification yard, Antwerp-Noord has been very important in cargo transport since 1877. Today, that importance is still being felt with the departure of over 75% of Belgian-based freight trains going through it. With two classification humps and more than 100 tracks, this yard is perfect for any kind of cargo transport.
Public transportation
De Lijn is a company running public transportation in the city. It has about 14 tram lines, some of which make use of underground tunnels, and it takes you to the central railway station in a short amount of time. A great place for many bus lines, Franklin Rooseveltplaats acts as a city’s main hub for local and regional bus routes.

The former home of painter Pieter Paul Rubens, Rubenshuis was built by him personally as both a place to live and work. The Red Star Line Museum shows the stories of many migrants who sailed on the Red Star Line ships. This includes people from Belgium that embarked from the building in which the museum is located.
