Firstly, there is evidence of pre-Indo-European civilization from establishing the first settlement on the northern bank of the Mureş stream in the 5th millennium B.C. Moreover, human settlements on the left bank of this river extended to show evidence that humans were living here before the 4th millennium. A civilization from the 3rd millennium B.C. had settlements on both sides of the Mureş River and some islands. They were prosperous but peaked at around 1000 BC. The site of the Astoria hotel had been excavated for its foundation; as a result, a human skeleton was found from the bronze age.
The first Dacian fortresses were built in the 1st millennium B.C. By the 5th century A.D., a group of Scythians also arrived but were assimilated by the Dacian population. And between the 4th and 3rd centuries, the Celts settled on both banks of the Mureş River in the vicinity of the existing settlements. The coexistence of the Celts only lasted for about two centuries before they were absorbed by far more numerous groups- the Dacians.
The Roman army conquered the Dacian settlement in the south of Micălaca around 101-102. During the second Dacian war, Trajan conquered territories north of the Mureş river, now part of Romania. In Aradul Nou, the old Roman army created a fort called Castra of Aradul Nou, which housed a legion called Legio IV Flavia Felix. During the 2nd to 4th centuries, Dacian and Sarmatian tribes resided in the area where today’s city is located. Said settlements were very active in economic relations with the Roman empire.
In the 10th century, the Hungarians began their expansion in Transylvania, with one of the main routes being through Mureş valley. Under the threat of Hungarian growth, Ruler Glad built a fortress at Vladimirescu-schanzen. After their conquest and destruction in the middle of the tenth century. A ruler, Achtum, rebuilt it, but Hungarians again destroyed them.
