The city of Arezzo is located in eastern Tuscany, Italy. Arezzo Cathedral has a 15th-century fresco by Piero della Francesca depicting Mary Magdalene and painted vaulted ceilings. Another chapel decorated with Piero frescoes can be found nearby in the Basilica di San Francesco. In the Basilica di San Domenico, Cimabue’s 13th-century “Crucifix” can be found. The imposing Medicean Fortress frames views of the city.
One of the twelve most important Etruscan cities, Arezzo is considered one of the Capita Etruriae (Etruscan capitals) mentioned by Livy. It was part of the Etruscan League. An Etruscan acropolis next to San Donatus, the acropolis of San Cornelio, was occupied and fortified during the Etruscan period, according to Etruscan remains. Other significant Etruscan evidence includes parts of walls, the Etruscan necropolis on Poggio del Sole (still called “Hill of the Sun”), the bronzes, the “Chimera of Arezzo” (5th century B.C.) and the “Minerva” (4th century B.C.), which were discovered in Florence in the 16th century. Etruscan nobles of Arezzo also benefited from increasing trade connections with Greece: Euphronios’ krater, painted circa 1050 BC, depicts a battle against Amazons (in the Museo Civico, Arezzo 1465) is among the best examples.
Rome conquered Arretium in 311 BC, establishing it as a military station via Cassia, which connected Rome to the basin of the Po. During the Roman Civil War, Arretium supported Marius (157-86 B.C.), and the victorious Sulla (c. 138-78 B.C.) founded an Arretium Fidens (“Faithful Arretium”) colony there. As a descendant of the Etruscan aristocracy, Gaius Vilnius Maecenas became eponymous as “patron of the arts.” During the Augustan period, Arretium Vetus (“Old Arretium”) flourished as the third-largest city in Italy. Among its most widely exported pottery manufacturers were the characteristic molded and glazed Arretine ware, bucchero-ware, and red-painted vases (referred to as coral vases).
An inscription dedicated to Arezzo’s patron was carved around 261 AD by the town council and named Volusianus Petronius Taurus Taurus. Volusianus’s association with the city may have political/military significance, as discussed in that article.
A steep hill rises from the River Arno floodplain to form Arezzo. The cathedral, the town hall, and the Medici Fortress (Fortezza Medicea) are in the upper part of the town. From the Fortress, the main streets branch off to the lower part of town. Despite the addition of later structures, the upper part of the town still maintains its medieval appearance.

Arezzo’s summers are short, warm, and mostly clear, while its winters are long, cold, and partly cloudy. Temperatures typically range between 32°F and 87°F throughout the year and are rarely below 22°F or above 96°F. To enjoy hot-weather activities in Arezzo, you should visit between early July and late August.
There is an hour’s drive southeast of Florence in Tuscany, Italy, to Arezzo, a rural center of Etruscan origin. Especially since it’s easy to get to by train, it’s worth a visit. You can take a day trip here if you are based in Florence, and seeing all the major sights in a day is possible without fighting crowds.
Arezzo is a city that combines the best of old and new Tuscany with an easy-going lifestyle and fewer tourists than you’d expect from a city so culturally rich and exciting. Taking a stroll around Arezzo is hard to avoid drawing comparisons to Florence.
This sloping plaza appears in Life is Beautiful, starring Roberto Benigni. There are elegant palaces surrounding the square, which is beautiful. Along the north side, Vasari’s graceful colonnade on Palazzo delle Logge dominates, and Santa Maria della Pieve’s rounded apse can be found next to the 14th-century Palazzo della Faternitaå dei Laici.
Guillaume de Marcillat, a French stained-glass artist who worked almost exclusively in Italy, has four of his windows there, as well as the tomb of Pope Gregory X. On the high altar are the late Gothic tomb and relics of St. Donatus, Bishop of Arezzo, who was martyred during Diocletian’s reign.
Known as the Pieve, the Parish Church of St. Mary is the oldest surviving church in the town and its most significant Romanesque building. In the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, as well as in 1863, the church was rebuilt, altered, and restored several times from the 12th century onward. Nevertheless, it is one of the finest examples of Pisan Romanesque in eastern Tuscany.
The Basilica of San Francesco, in the center of Arezzo, was built in 1290, and various reconstructions and extensions continued until the 20th century. In the 15th century, chapels were added to the left side of the church. A circular window by Guillaume de Marcellus, Pope Honorius III Approving the Rule of St. Francis, is above the doorway.
Located north of the cathedral, this aisleless church features a plain facade typical of Mendicant churches from the 13th century. The city was founded in 1275 and is believed to have been designed by Nicola Pisano.
Seeing Giorgio Vasari’s works at the Palazzo Vecchio and in Florence, you can imagine what his own home might look like, where he could indulge all his artistic whims.
Built on the remains of a Roman amphitheater from the second century A.D., the Gaius Vilnius Maecenas National Archaeological Museum opened in 2000. An extraordinary collection of sealed Arezzo ware, an ancient form of pottery discovered during excavations, highlights the museum’s more than 20 galleries.
Piazza Grande is filled with antique dealers every first entire weekend of the month, whose displays spill out into the surrounding streets. Across the narrow streets, art is displayed on the walls of buildings, and goods are displayed on tables and spread on rugs.
Constructed by Cosimo I de Medici in 1538 to strengthen the defensive system of the Medici holdings, it was built over buildings dating back to the 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. This plan is in the shape of a five-pointed star, which was popular then.
Showcasing ancient sculptures from the Etruscan period, Renaissance masterpieces, and contemporary art, the Museo Nazionale d’Arte Medievale e Moderna collection is outstanding. There are excellent ceramic works by Della Robbia and works by Arezzo-born architect/artist Giorgio Vasari.
