Asti Overview

In the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, about 55 kilometers east of Turin on the plain of the Tanaro River, Asti is a comune with 74,348 inhabitants. It is regarded as the modern capital of Montferrat and is the capital of the province of Asti.

History

The Neolithic period marks the beginning of people living around Asti. The toponym likely comes from Ast, which means “hill” in ancient Celtic, before the Romans conquered the area in 174BC.

The Romans built a fortified camp named Hasta in 124 BC, which eventually developed into an entire city. As early as 89 B.C., the town was a colonia, and as early as 49 B.C., it was a municipium. Taking advantage of its strategic location on the Tanaro river and the Via Fulvia, which connected Derthona (Tortona) to Augusta Taurinorum (Turin), Asti became an essential city of the Augustan Regio IX. In addition, the town was connected to what is today Switzerland and France via other roads.

When the Western Roman Empire fell, the city played a crucial role during the early stages of the barbarian invasions. Visigoths invaded northern Italy in early 402 AD and advanced on Mediolanum (modern Milan), the imperial capital. The young emperor Honorius was compelled to flee Milan to find safety in Arles in Gaul after failing to wait any longer for promised reinforcements. The Gothic cavalry cut off his escape route through the Alps just after his convoy left Milan and crossed the River Po. Until more Roman troops could be assembled in Italy, he was forced to take emergency refuge in Hasta. Hasta was under siege by the Goths until March, when General Stilicho, bringing reinforcements from the Rhine, defeated them at the Battle of Pollentia. Thanks to its massive wall system, Hasta could hold out against barbarian invasions after the fall of the Western Empire, and its economy plummeted.

Climate

Due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, Asti experiences warmer winters and cooler summers than Turin. The wettest months are spring and autumn; during the hottest months, rain is less likely to fall but is more robust when it does, usually in thunderstorms.

Events

Asti’s Palio di Asti is one of the most famous events, in which all the old town wards, called “Rioni” and “Borghi,” along with nearby towns, compete. After Asti won a battle against the rival city Alba in the Middle Ages, a race was held around Alba’s walls. Since then, the race has been held annually in Asti. The Asti Palio is the oldest recorded one in Italy and is held every 3rd Sunday of September in the triangular Piazza Alfieri in the old town.

Wine

Asti is the center of production of sparkling Asti (DOCG, also called Asti Spumante). Typically, Asti has a sweet taste and low alcohol content (less than 8%). Moscato Bianco white muscat grapes are used exclusively for their production. There is also a premium version of the wine, Moscato d’Asti (DOCG), and red wine, Barbera.

Food

In September, a week before the Palio, Asti holds the Festival of Festivals. During the festival, the towns of Asti’s province meet in the Campo del Palio, where they serve their typical food and wine. On the Sunday of the Sagre, all the towns involved hold a parade along Asti’s streets to reach the “Campo del Palio” square with floats depicting traditional farming.

The white truffle season, or “tartufo bianco,” takes place in Asti province from October to December. Even though Alba’s truffle fair is more well-known, some of the best truffles can be found around Asti’s hills, and a local truffle festival is held every weekend.

Sport

Asti Calcio F.C. (ex-A.C.D. Asti) was the town’s main football club until it folded in 2017. In 2017, a third football club, A.S.D. Colline Alfieri Don Bosco (formerly A.C. Celle, from Celle Enomondo) relocated to the city and renamed itself “A.S.D. Alfieri Asti.” A.S.D. Asti has been its name since 2019.

Transport

The Asti railway station, opened in 1849, is part of the Turin-Genoa and Castagnole-Asti-Mortara railway lines. Additionally, it is at the junction of two other lines, one going to Genoa, the other going to Chivasso.

What is Asti, Italy, known for?

Today, Asti is best known for its delicious food, the sparkling wines Asti Spumante and Moscato d’Asti, and the Palio di Ast, a bareback horse race through the town.

Is Asti worth visiting?

Although many people think of Asti as a destination for food and wine, the city is a treasure trove of history and art. Piedmont’s famous Asti Spumante wine is an important economic asset, but visitors are disappointed to find no wineries in central Asti.
