Aviles Overview
Asturias is the home of Avilés, a Spanish town. Along with Oviedo and Gijón, Avilés is one of the principal cities of the Principality of Asturias.
It is located on the flattest terrain in the municipality, partially on land that used to belong to the sea, surrounded by small promontories under 140 meters high. It is the country’s national seaport, located in the Avilés estuary, west of Peas Cape, on the Asturian coast.
There are mainly industrial activities in Avilés and famous beaches nearby, such as Salinas. The city also has essential churches, such as St. Thomas of Canterbury. The Palacio Valdés Theater (in Spanish: Teatro Palacio Valdés) and the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Center (in Spanish: Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer).
Toponymy
No documented evidence of the town proper existed before the late Early Middle Ages, even though the name “Avilés” is likely ancient. According to toponymy in northern Spain, the name Abilius is thought to originate from a Roman landowner or Romanized Germanic warrior who settled there from/to the Kingdom of the Suebi or Visigothic Kingdom.

According to archaeological excavations, the area was settled in the upper Paleolithic period.
Among the earliest well-known documents is the endowment of two churches by King Alfonso III of Asturias in 905. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important ports of the Biscay Bay, trading primarily with French ports. It had two nuclei at this time: a fishermen’s district, Sabugo, and an aristocratic center, La Villa, which stood across a small water inlet at the site of present-day Avilés’ central park. In addition to its strategic and commercial importance, La Villa was surrounded by solid walls. The Catholic Monarchs have held a free market every Monday since 15 January 1479. As a naval center, Avilés is supported by the construction of ships with wood harvested from nearby forests, as well as the participation of local sailors in the Castilian army’s conquest of Seville.

Throughout the town, there are sculptures in various styles: the set of sculptures in El Muelle park, especially the Pedro Menendez sculpture and La foca (the seal); the Ruta del acero set of sculptures along the Avilés estuary; Avilés sculpture, and others such as Marta y María, El hombre que escucha la piedra (The Man Who Listens to the Stone), El eslabón, Entre samba lines, etc.
Climate
The area experiences an oceanic climate, with warm summers and overcast and sunny days. The weather is moderate in winter, with significant rains and winds, although Asturias’ cold climate sometimes results in snowfall at sea level. In summer, the temperature rarely drops below zero °C (32 °F) or rises above 30 °C (86 °F). Due to its heavy maritime features and northerly position in the country, summer highs are shallow by Spanish standards.
