Agios Nikolaos is a town located in the southern part of Crete. It is not only a tourist destination but also a kind of reminder for people who live on the island. In this way, it attracts both tourists and locals. However, it isn’t the most popular spot in Crete due to its small size and lack of visitor facilities.
History
Agios Nikolaos first became important as a settlement in the late Bronze Age and is a popular tourism destination in Greece because of its nightlife. It was first settled by Dorians who had taken over the hilltop settlements on Lato during an unstable period when security was no longer a concern.
Nikolaos is commonly known as Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus. The stress in the name falls on the second syllable of “Nikolaos.” Although it can be a tough language to follow, the Greek island of Ayios Nikolaos means “Saint Nicholas” or “the saint.” The town eventually gained importance as Greece’s principal commercial port.
Archaeology – Visit Latsos with the ancient ruins of Hagios Nikolaos and a historic site near the town. There are archaeological remains from the Final Neolithic era, as well as Roman ruins. Activity on the site continued throughout the Minoan Bronze Age, Classical Greek, and Roman periods, spanning up to 4,000 years. Today, Priniatikos Pyrgos is undergoing excavation by an international team under the auspices of the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies in Athens.
Transportation
Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and the whole of Europe through Heraklion International Airport, and many daily ferry services in Heraklion 64 kilometers (40 mi). Sitia Airport, 67 kilometers away from Athens, is one of the leading transport hubs in Attica and Greece. You can either fly domestically or charter through it or even get a department of the Hellenic Mediterranean University right there. It’s an exciting time for Sitia as it continues to be a popular tourist destination.
