Bacau Overview

Bacau is a city in Romania, the 12th largest in the country, with a population of 196,883 people in 2016. It’s close to the Eastern Carpathians and is known for its rich cultural heritage.

Etymology

The town’s name, which features in Old Church Slavonic documents, most probably comes from a secret word. People with the surname Bako or Bakó are documented in medieval Transylvania and 15th-century Bulgaria, but sources say that the name is of Turkic origin. According to Spinei Victor, it’s most probably Cuman or Pecheneg. Nicolae Iorga thinks that the city’s name is Hungarian (as Adjud and Sascut). One theory suggests that the town’s name has a Slavic origin, pointing to the Proto-Slavic word, which means “ox” or “bull,” as the region is very well suited for raising cattle. The term, rendered into the Romanian alphabet as bâc, was probably the original form of it before Hungarian speakers settled down in this area. “Bakau” is used in German, “Bákó” in Hungarian, and “Baka” in Turkish.

History

Bacău grew up in a location that allowed water to pass through. There is archaeological evidence of human settlement in the center of Bacău near Curtea Domnească dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries when this was a military fortification. Several vessels are ornamented with crosses, hinting that the inhabitants must have been Christians. The valley was under Pechenegs and Cumans’ control during the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries. Colonists played an essential role in developing the region. Archaeological findings from the second half of the 15th century, such as surface and semi-buried dwellings, show that Hungarians settled in Hungary in 1345-1347. At this time, the region was part of Hungary. Some evidence of German colonizers at the time has been found. A type of pottery used by Germans in the 13th century has also been discovered on the banks of rivers Bistrița. Historical records show that the original settlement in the town was a Roman Catholic community situated near a stock market frequented by locals on the river’s lower course.

The town first appeared in Moldova in 1408 when Prince Alexander the Good listed the various customs points for Polish merchants. The first mention of the customs house in a town comes from the phrase “krainee mîto,” which is written down as one word in Old Church Slavonic. This phrase may indicate that it was the last customs stop before Moldavia’s border with Wallachia. An undated document reveals that the şoltuz in Bacău, the head of the town elected by its inhabitants, had the right to sentence felons to death, at least for robberies. It hints at an extended privilege, similar to royal towns’. From this point of view, the right may have been granted when the territory was still under the control of the Kingdom of Hungary. The seal from Bacău was oval, which isn’t that frequent in Moldavia and is only present in a few towns.

Alexander the Good donated the wax collected as part of the tax payable by the town to a monastery close by. Most probably, his wife Margaret founded the Franciscan Church of the Holy Virgin in Bacău. But according to the Catholic Church, Saint Nicholas was the town’s prominent saint. John of Rya, the bishop at Baia and an important Catholic figure, wrote a letter referring to Bacău as a civitas where he implies that there was a Catholic diocese. The letter also expressively relates that Hussite immigrants in Bohemia, Moravia, or Hungary who had undergone persecution were settled in the town and granted privileges by Alexander the Good.

Demographics

The population of Bacău as of 2011 census data is 144,307.

Climate

Bacău is famous for its warm summers, freezing winters, and partly sunny weather all year round. The temperature of Bacău is typically between 22°F – 82°F. The best time to visit for warm-weather activities is from early June to mid-September.

The city is located about 300 kilometers (around 186 miles) North of Bucharest. George Enescu International Airport, which is 5 kilometers away, can provide direct flights to Bucharest and major European cities. Bacău air traffic control center is one of the busiest and is a communication hub for flights between Asia, Europe, and North America.

The Bacău railway station is one of the busiest in Romania and has access to the Romanian railway main trunk number 500. Thus the city is connected to the main Romanian cities through railways, and the railway station is an important transit stop for international trains from Ukraine, Russia, and Bulgaria.

This city has the DN2 road (E85) that you can use to get to Bucharest (to the south) and Suceava and Iași (to the north). This is an essential road to the city of Brașov if you’re coming from the Eastern side. The town is located at the intersection of several secondary roads. It will, in the future, be connected by the A7 motorway running from the border with Ukraine to Ploiești (junction with A3). As of 2020, this motorway intersects with the Bacău bypass.

Culture

Bacău has a public university and several colleges. Notable Romanian poets George Bacovia and Vasile Alecsandri are also residents of this city. The “Mihail Jora” Athenaeum, the Philharmonic Orchestra, a Dramatic Theater, and a Puppet Theater are all located here. Every year during Christmas, a Moldavian Festival of Winter Traditions takes place, reuniting folk artists from all over. The exhibition “Saloanele Moldovei” and the International Painting Camp at Toscani, near Bacău, reunite influential Romanian plastic artists with their counterparts from abroad. The city of Oradea has a lot of history to explore, with landmarks such as the Museum Complex “Iulian Antonescu” and The Victor Austin Astronomical Observatory.
