Art and architecture are prominent features of Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region. Other modernist landmarks, such as the Sagrada Familia, dot the city, and Antonio Gaud was the church’s architect. Modern art by their namesakes can be found at the Picasso Museum and the Fundació Joan Miró. Several Roman archaeological sites are included in the city history museum, M.U.H.B.A.
The name Barcelona comes from the ancient Iberian Baŕkeno, as evidenced by the inscription on the right side of the coin in Iberian script as Barkeno, in ancient Greek sources as Βαρκινών, Barkinṓn, and in Latin as Barcino, Barcilonum, and Barcelona.
It is still being determined when the earliest settlements took place on the present-day site of Barcelona. Several tombs and dwellings dating back to earlier than 5000 BC have been discovered in the ruins of an early settlement. There are two different legends about the founding of Barcelona, and the mythological Hercules is credited with founding the city. According to the second legend, the city was founded by the historical Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, who supposedly renamed the city Barcino after his family in the 3rd century B.CB.C. However, neither historical nor linguistic evidence supports this claim.
During the Roman occupation, the town was redrawn as a castrum (Roman military camp) centered around the hill called “Mons Taber,” near the Generalitat (Catalan Government) and city hall. Approximately where the current Plaça de Sant Jaume is located, the Roman Forum was located at the crossroads of the Cardo Maximus and Decumanus Maximus. Thus, over 2000 years ago, the city’s political center, Catalonia, remained in the exact location.
Colonia Julia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino or Colonia Julia Augusta Faventia Julia Augusta Pia Barcino was the colony’s name under the Romans. Despite being eclipsed by its neighbor Tarraco (modern Tarragona), Pompeonius Mela mentions it among the district’s small towns. Still, later writers suggest that it grew in wealth and importance, as it enjoyed a beautiful location and excellent harbor. Despite being an imperial province, it was free of imperial burdens. Some coins from the era of Galba are still extant; the city minted its coins.
Barcelona lies along the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by the mountain range of Collserola, the Llobregat river to the southwest, and the Bess river to the north. 170 km2 (66 sq mi) of this plain, of which 101 km2 (39.0 sq mi) are occupied by the city. Catalan borders France and the Pyrenees are 120 kilometers (75 miles) away.
Barcelona’s climate is classified as Mediterranean hot summer (Csa) with mild winters and hot summers. Autumn and spring are the wettest seasons. In contrast to a typical Mediterranean climate, there is a short (3 months) dry season in summer and less precipitation in winter. As a result of the Mediterranean climate, both June and August are wetter than February.
As of 1 January 2016, Barcelona had 1,608,746 residents on a land area of 101.4 km2 (39 sq mi). In an area of 636 square kilometers (246 square miles) (density of 5,060 inhabitants/km2), it is the main component of an administrative area of Greater Barcelona. Four million eight hundred forty thousand people were living in urban areas. With a population of 5,474,482, Barcelona is the nucleus of the metropolitan area.
Almost everyone in Barcelona understands Spanish (according to a linguistic census conducted by the Government of Catalonia in 2013). Catalan is also widely spoken in the city, being understood by 95% of the population, spoken by 72.3%, read by 79%, and written by 53%.
Barcelona has one of the highest populations in Europe. The city council calculated the population to be 1,621,090 in 2008, with Eixample having the highest density of 15,926 inhabitants per square kilometer in the 102.2 km2 sized municipality.
Most of the population is Roman Catholic (208 churches). Barcelona residents of all ages identified themselves as Catholics in a 2011 survey conducted by InfoCatólica. More than half of the respondents did not identify themselves as Catholic Christians for the first time. According to the numbers, the number of self-identified Catholics has declined in Spain. Based on a survey by the Center for Sociological Research, 53.2% of Barcelona residents identified as Catholic (9.9% practicing Catholics, 43.3% non-practicing Catholics).
Barcelona’s metropolitan area is home to over 66% of the people in Catalonia, one of the wealthiest regions in Europe and the fourth richest in Spain, with a G.D.P. per capita of €28,400 (16% higher than the E.U.E.U. average). It was the 4th most economically powerful city in the European Union and 35th in the world by gross G.D.P. in 2009, with a G.D.P. of $177 billion (equivalent to $34,821 per capita, 44% more than the E.U.E.U. average). Eurostat reports that Barcelona’s G.D.P. in 2004 was €80,894 per head. Barcelona was also the fourth-best business city in Europe and the fastest-growing city in Europe, with a growth of 17% per year in 2009.
Barcelona was visited by 5.5 million international tourists in 2011, making it the 20th-most city worldwide by international visitors and the fifth-most town in Europe after London, Paris, Istanbul, and Rome. The number of international visitors to Prague and Milan increased in 2015, respectively. Spain’s most visited city, Barcelona, is renowned for its Rambles.
The university system in Barcelona is well-developed. The oldest is the University of Barcelona (founded in 1450), and the newest is Pompeu Fabra University. The Polytechnic University of Catalonia is located in Barcelona, along with the private EADA Business School (founded in 1957), which offered manager training programs to businesses for the first time.
Barcelona has a 2000-year-old cultural heritage. The Catalan language (very much suppressed during Franco’s dictatorship) has been promoted through the recovery of works from the past and the stimulation of new ones. According to the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network, Barcelona is a world-class city. UNESCO has designated it a City of Literature since 2015 as part of the Creative Cities Network.
F.C.F.C. Barcelona is a world-famous football club, considered one of the largest and the second richest in the world. Each of F.C.F.C. Barcelona’s handball, roller hockey, ice hockey, futsal, and rugby teams has won national or European championships at some point.
In addition to its world-class football team, Barcelona is known for its stunning architecture, lively nightlife, sandy beaches, and world-class cuisine. Several colorful neighborhood festivals attract tourists worldwide, not to mention a vibrant cultural heritage.
