In southeastern Italy, Barletta is a city in the province of Apulia. In the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Barletta is the capoluogo, along with Andria and Trani. With 94,700 residents, it is one of the largest cities in the country. There is a valley called the Valle dell’Ofanto on the city’s territory.
Barletta lies on the Adriatic coast, where an abundance of silt from the Ofanto river covers its rocky shore. It forms the border between the provinces of Bari and Foggia and has always influenced agricultural activity. Barletta is also the starting point of the fertile plain of the Tavoliere, which starts at the mouth of the river.
Before the Roman era, Barletta was known as Bardulos or Barulum, from the Illyrian name “Bardylis,” which developed long before the Roman period. At the end of the Bronze Age (11th-10th centuries B.C.), Illyrian groups migrated from the eastern Adriatic to Italy during the transition to the Iron Age, one generation before either arrived in the region.
A powerful Norman and Lombard stronghold in the Middle Ages, it became an important staging point for the Crusaders, Teutonic Knights, Templars, and the Knights of St.John. Archbishops of Nazareth took refuge in Barletta after the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land (permanently in 1327).
Following the Norman destruction of Cannae, Barletta experienced periods of great splendor under King Frederick II, and then the Angevin kings of Naples as immigrants from Canne increased its population.
The city was the scene of a historic victory of Italian knights over French prisoners in the Challenge of Barletta (13 February 1503) during the guerilla war between the French and the Spanish over Southern Italy at the beginning of the 16th century. During Gonzalo de Cordoba’s siege of the city, this served as a handy diversion for his restless army. During the Spanish rule of southern Italy, the city was a fortress, and French troops sacked the town under Odet de Foix in 1528.
Between 1806 and 1927, the city was its district’s capital and the lower prefecture’s seat and sided with the French under Joachim Murat during the Napoleonic Wars.
Summers in Barletta are short, hot, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are long, cold, windy, and partly cloudy. Temperatures typically range from 41°F to 88°F throughout the year, with temperatures rarely falling below 35°F or rising above 95°F. The best time to visit Barletta for hot-weather activities is late June to early September.

Barletta can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (exiting at Andria-Barletta or Canosa), the SS16 highway, or the Bari-Palese Airport, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) away.
