Bedzin Overview
Bedzin, in southern Poland, is a city in the D«Brown Basin. The Czarna Przemsza River (a tributary of the Vistula) lies in the Silesian Highlands. While part of the Silesian Voivodeship, Bdzin belongs historically to Lesser Poland and is one of its oldest towns. It is considered to be the capital of the industrial Dbrowa Basin.
Since its formation in 1999, it has been part of the Silesian Voivodeship, and it used to be located in the Katowice Voivodeship before 1999. Brudzin is part of a 2.7 million person conurbation – Katowice urban area and is within a greater Silesian metropolitan area of about 5,294,000 people. As of December 2021, 55,183 people were living in the city.
Będzin is located 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Katowice and 4 kilometers (2 miles) from Sosnowiec’s center. Together with Sosnowiec, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Czeladź, Wojkowice, Sławków, and Siewierz, it is a part of Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, a highly industrialized and densely populated part of western Lesser Poland. Besides Sosnowiec and Dbrowa Górnicza, Bdzin borders Siemianowice lskie, Wojkowice, and the village of Psary. In addition to St. Dorothy Mountain, the town has a total area of 37.37 km2 (14.43 sq mi).
Districts
Będzin is divided into eight districts: Grodziec was a separate town from 1951–1975. Gzichów has been part of Będzin since 1915, Ksawera has been part of Będzin since 1923, Łagisza in 1967–1973 was a particular town, Małobądz been part of Będzin since 1915, Śródmieście is the historic center, Warpie is part of Będzin since 1923.
Etymology
A Polish given name called Beda or Bedzan is known to have given the name Bedzin. There were other names for the town in the past, including Banden, Bandin, Bandzien, Bondin, Bandzen, Bandzin, Badzin, Bendzin, and Bendsburg (1939–1945).
History
It was first mentioned in 1301 a settlement (or good) existed here as early as the 9th century, guarding an ancient trade route from Kyiv to Western Europe. Casimir III built a stone strongpoint in the 1340s when he founded a town here. This town, located in the Lesser Poland Province of the Polish Crown, became a royal city of Poland on August 5, 1358.
During the Jagiellonian period, the trade center was on the border between Lesser, Poland, and Silesia. In 1565 King Sigismund II Augustus allowed the town to have five markets a week, and in 1589, at Będzin Castle, Polish–Austrian negotiations took place. It was already home to a Jewish community at that time. In 1655, the Swedes destroyed the town and castle during The Deluge, and Będzin did not recover for many years. Prussia annexed the city in 1795 following the Third Partition of Poland, and it became part of the newly formed province of New Silesia. After being regained by Poles in 1807, it became part of the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw, and in 1815 it became part of the Russian-controlled Congress Poland.
Jewish community
Until World War II, Będzin was home to a vibrant Jewish community. Jews comprised around 51% of the total population of 21,200 based on the Russian census of 1897. In 1921, the town’s Jewish community numbered 17,298 people or 62.1 percent of its population. This area was overrun by the German Army (Wehrmacht) in September 1939, followed by the S.S. death squads (Einsatzgruppen), who burned the synagogue and murdered 200 Jews. 1942 saw the establishment of a Bedzin Ghetto. Eventually, in the summer of 1943, most Jews in Będzin were deported to the nearby German Auschwitz concentration camp. As one of the last Polish communities to be liquidated, there are many survivors from there, and personal photographs have been recovered, providing a glimpse of pre-war life.
Transport
Będzin is conveniently situated between two national roads – the 94th (Zgorzelec-Kraków) and the 86th (Katowice-Warsaw). In Pyrzowice, 23 km (14 miles) away from Katowice, is the Katowice International Airport. A rail hub is also in the town, where two connections meet. There are three rail stations in Bilzzin (Bilzzin-Miasto, Bilzzin, and Bilzzin-Ksawera) and good transportation links with neighboring cities via bus and tram. Trams were first introduced there in 1928. During that time, the Black Przemsza River, which runs through the city, was also an important transportation route. “Black” Przemsza is so called because as it flows through Bdzin, the river bed exhibits a coal seam, which makes the water above it appear dark.
Sports
MKS Bdzin is one of the city’s most notable sports clubs, and it competes in Poland’s top league, the PlusLiga. The Zagwebie Steelers play American football, and Sarmacja B’dzin plays association football in the lower leagues.
