Bergamo Overview
Bergamo is located northeast of Milan, in the region of Lombardy, known as Città Alta. Cobblestone streets, Venetian walls, and funiculars characterize its upper district. Duomo di Bergamo, the city’s cathedral, is located here. Tiepolo’s 18th-century frescoes adorn the chapel of Cappella Colleoni and the Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.
By way of the motorway A4, which runs along the axis between Milan, Verona, and Venice, Bergamo is well connected to several Italian cities. In 2017, Il Caravaggio International Airport served 12.3 million passengers, making it the third-busiest airport in Italy, and Milan is the most visited city in Lombardy, followed by Bergamo.
History
Bergamo was founded by the Celtic tribe of Cenomani on the site of the ancient town of Bergomum. Approximately 10,000 people lived there at its peak when it became a Roman municipality in 49 BCE. Attila destroyed it in the fifth century when it was a hub on the military road between Friuli and Raetia.
In the 6th century, Bergamo was one of northern Italy’s most important Lombard duchies, along with Brescia, Trento, and Cividale del Friuli: Wallaris was its first Lombard duke.
As a result of Charlemagne’s conquest of the Lombard Kingdom, it became the seat of a county under Auteramus (d. 816). During the 19th century, the British Museum found a valuable Lombardic hoard dating from the 6th and 7th centuries.
Bergamo was an independent commune from the 11th century onwards, participating in the 1165 victory over Frederick I Barbarossa in the Lombard League. A Guelph faction called the Colleoni was allied with a Ghibelline faction called the Suardi, respectively.
As a result of feuds between the two, Omodeo Tasso’s family fled north in 1250. Still, he returned to Bergamo in the 13th century to organize the city’s couriers: this eventually led to the founding of the first modern postal service under the Imperial Thurn und Taxis dynasty.
Climate
Bergamo has warm summers, cold winters, and partly cloudy skies (H2) throughout the year. It rarely falls below 23°F or rises above 90°F for the year, ranging between 31°F and 84°F. During the summer months of early July and mid-August, Bergamo is ideal for hot-weather activities.
Cityscape
There are two central areas of the town: the Città Alta (“upper city”), a medieval hilltop town surrounded by 16th-century defensive walls, and the Città Bassa (“lower city”). It is connected by funiculars, roads, and footpaths between the two parts of town.

Bergamo has 119,551 residents (with about 500 000 people in its greater area), located in the province of Bergamo, Lombardia, of whom 46.6% are males, and 53.4% are females. As a percentage of the population, minors (children under 18) accounted for 16.79 percent, while pensioners accounted for 23.61 percent. Minors and pensioners make up 17.88 percent of the Italian population, respectively, and pensioners make up 20.29 percent of the Italian people.
Bergamo residents are, on average, 45 years old, compared to 43 for Italians. The population of Bergamo grew by 5.41 percent between 2002 and 2010, while the people of Italy grew by 5.77 percent.

Citta Alta

Piazza Vecchia
The square at the heart of the old town is framed by an impressive assembly of patrician houses, including the Palazzo della Ragione (city hall). Its upper side, adjacent to the tall tower, Torre del Comune, is formed by the stone staircase and loggia of three Gothic arches of the 12th-century Palazzo della Ragione.
Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of St. Mary Major)
The archway above Piazza Vecchia reaches the cathedral square, and together they are one of Bergamo’s most impressive architectural treasures. Founded in 1137 as a Romanesque basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore has a stepped-back tower over the crossing and an ornate choir.
Cappella Colleoni (Colleoni Chapel)
The most striking façade in Bergamo is situated right next to Santa Maria Maggiore in Piazza Duomo. A lavishly decorated façade of multicolored marble inlays makes up the façade of the Cappella Colleoni, an early example of the Lombard Renaissance style.
Art Gallery of the Accademia Carrara
The Accademia Carrara is a prominent art museum in a palace entranced by a stepped lane from the Porta Sant’Agostino. The museum’s more than 1,500 paintings and 130 sculptures are currently on display at any time, including about 500 images and 60 sculptures.
Cinta muraria and the City Gates
The old city is surrounded by more than four kilometers of Venetian walls. From Porta Sant’Alessandro, near the Donizetti Museum, they take the Viale delle Mura past Porta San Giacomo, one of the town gates, and continue past the church of Sant’Agostino to Porta Sant’Agostino.
Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro
Built in 1459, the cathedral of Sant’Alessandro was added in the Neoclassical style in 1889 at one end of Piazza del Duomo. Tiepolo, Previtali, and Moroni paintings and beautiful Baroque choir stalls decorate the interior.
Baptistery
The Baptistery is an unusual octagonal building dating from 1340 to the right of the Cappella Colleoni. Originally a part of Santa Maria Maggiore, it was taken down in 1661, stored, reassembled in 1856, and then again torn down and reerected here in 1898.
Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali (Natural Science Museum)
The Via Colleoni runs northwest from Piazza Vecchia to the Citadel, which houses an excellent museum displaying natural science, ethnography, paleontology, and archaeology exhibits.
Piazza Matteotti
Located in the Lower Town (Città Bassa), in the center of the city, you will find beautiful gardens, parks, and monuments and the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with its war memorial, Torre dei Caduti.
