Beringen Overview
The city and municipality of Beringen are located in the Belgian province of Limburg. Beringen municipality includes Beringen proper and the old communes of Beverly, Koersel, and Paal.
History
Gold coins and artifacts discovered in 1995 on Beringen’s territory prove that the area was already inhabited during Celtic times. In Europe, these are the most northerly late-Iron-Age gold objects dating from around 90 B.C. Further evidence indicates an early establishment, including Roman coins. In 1120, Beringen was first mentioned as ‘Beringe,’ which comes from the Germanic Beringum, which means ‘with the people of Bero.’ The abbey of Corbie in France had received the land of Beringen during Carolingian times.
A city charter was granted by Loon County in 1239, from which it was part of most of the medieval period. There were impressive moats and gates encircling the city back then. As a whole, Loon County was annexed by the Prince-Bishopric of Liège in 1366. As one of the diocese’s 23 bonnes villes (principal towns), Beringen shared its history until 1795, when it was dissolved.
The first coal-bearing drill cores were obtained in Campine in 1901 under André Dumont’s guidance, which led to several coalmines being established. In 1919, Koersel began producing its first products. In the mid-1950s, cheaper energy sources became available elsewhere, and the golden age of coal production ended. October 28, 1989, marked the closure of Beringen’s last coal mine. Throughout the city, slag heaps and mining buildings can still be seen.
