At the edge of the sea, the Beveren area was heavily influenced by the tides in Roman times. Early inhabitants built primitive dams, which were later reinforced and built higher by religious communities that grew up in the region. In the 9th century, the Norman invasions prompted the Counts of Flanders and their vassals to defend this land even more. Beveren’s lords were among the local nobility, whose territory was eventually ceded to Louis I of Flanders in 1334. As a result, Beveren became the oldest political center of the Waasland region – the northeastern part of the historical County of Flanders – soaking in the glory of Flanders and Burgundy for over two centuries.

The area was flooded in 1570 by a catastrophic tide. Local authorities decided to dismantle the remaining dams for strategic reasons related to Antwerp’s protection. The rights to the territory were sold five years later. An Antwerp merchant bought the area closest to the Scheldt, while the Duke of Aarschot got the rest. During this period, the pre-merger communes were formed, which lasted until the French Revolution. Until 1846, the last parcel of land was dammed up after the territory had slowly been taken back from the sea since the 17th century.
