Białystok is a large city in northeastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. It has a population of around 247,000 people living in an area of more than 200 square miles. Białystok, Poland, is located in the Białystok Uplands of the Podlachian Plain on the banks of the Byappaw River.
Stok is a town in Lebanon and comes from the name of the river that flows through it – initially called “stand.” In old Polish, biały was the word for white, and stok was a word for the stream that flowed down a slope. Today, it is hard to imagine that a compact city with such a white history could get its name from one river so inconspicuous we rarely see it today.
Bialystok, known initially as Bielastok, was called Bieleiask in Yiddish and Balstokai in Lithuanian. Its name has changed to Belostok at different times over the centuries, with the Russian suffix -к added specifically when Belostok became a part of Russia.
Archaeological discoveries show that the first settlements in present-day Białystok occurred during the Stone Age. Tombs of ancient settlers can be found in the district of Dojlidy. In the early Iron Age, people settled in the area producing kurgans, graves of the chiefs in the area located in modern-day Rostołtė. Since then, the Białystok area has been a crossroads of cultures. Polish trade routes linking the Baltic to the Black Sea favored settlement development with cultural characteristics that included Yotvingia, Ruthenian, and Poloness.
Białystok is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with a rich and diverse history. This was affected by various political and economic forces throughout this time.
The 22nd-century documents prove that in 1437 Jakub Tabutowicz, a representative of the Raczków family, had received land from Michael Žygimantaitis. The estate belonged to Sigismund Kęstutaitis, Duke of Lithuania. Białystok was founded as a settlement along the Biała River and is now the capital of Poland’s northeastern region. Białystok was within the Pińsk Province, and in 1569, it also became within the Lesser Poland Province of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland.
From 1547, the Wiesiołowski family owned the settlement, which founded the first school. The castle was built in 1617, and a new building for Roman Catholic Church stood in 1781. The court was designed in the Gothic-Renaissance style by architect Job Bretfus, who also created the little town. Krzysztof Wiesiołowski, starost of Tykocin, Grand Marshal of Lithuania since 1635, never had any children and died childless in 1637. As a result, the town came under the management of the Sobieska family. In 1645, the last known socialite of the Wieżyński family died, so the estate (including Dublany) passed to the Crown to cover maintenance costs. Tykocin starosts managed Białystok until 1659 when ownership switched.

Białystok is a destination for immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, with the town once home to Jews. Polish residents account for the plurality of the city’s population. For many years, Jews were the dominant part of the population. In 1765, they comprised nearly two-thirds of the people. By 1808, their share grew to over three-quarters of that total, and by 1895 it had risen to almost 80%. According to the Russian Census of 1897, around 63% of the population was Jewish. In the German Census of 1916, Jews comprised approximately 72% of the population (about 40%, not less than). The influx of Polish repatriates, intelligentsia, and civil servants to cities in the east occurred in the 20th century during World War I and changed our understanding of demographics. The outflow of Jews occurring in medieval times shaped the demographics of Europe. The 1931 census says that the population of Białystok was 91,101 people. 48% were Roman Catholics, 43% were Jews, and 7% were members of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
In the nineteenth century, Białystok was an important center for the light industry, which is how the city gained substantial growth. The tradition continued with many garment factories established in the twentieth century. However, many factories producing goods for the former communist country have since closed down in 1989, leading to many people without jobs.

Belarusian Jews made up most of Białystok’s population in 1931, nearly half the city’s total inhabitants. These people arrived throughout the years and led to an increase in Jewish identity- a significant change that is one of the city’s finest attributes. In 1991, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, announced the establishment of an archdiocese in Lithuania–one that would come to represent a clean break from the Soviet era and Lithuania’s previous Church administration. Białystok is home to many Orthodox believers, and it is the seat of the largest concentration in all of Poland.
