Bled Overview

Slovenian resort town Bled is located along the glacial Lake Bled in the foothills of the Julian Alps. There is a museum, chapel, and printing press in Bled Castle, which was built in the 11th century. A steep staircase and a bell tower climb the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria, which sits at the center of the lake.

Name

Seldes was first mentioned in written sources in 1004 (and Veldes in 1011). A pre-Slavic origin is believed to be the etymology of the term. Veldes, the German name of the town, was either borrowed from Old Slovene Bold before AD 800 or is descended from the same pre-Slavic source.

Geography

About 50 km (31 mi) northwest of the national capital of Ljubljana, Bled lies at the foot of the Karawanks mountain range. The easternmost parts of the Julian Alps lie south of Lake Bled, along the Sava Bohinjka river and Bohinj Railway, which leads to the Bohinj basin and Lake Bohinj.

History

This area has been occupied since Mesolithic times, and the present-day locality likely arose during the Slavic settlement of the Eastern Alps about 600 years ago. Slavic Carantania came under Bavarian influence after being conquered by Frankish forces in 788.

As a sign of gratitude for the Church’s assistance to Henry II, the German king ceded ownership of the area to Albumin, Bishop of Brixen, in 1004. A second donation deed, signed by Henry II in 1011, included the castle and a plot of land equal in size to thirty king’s farms. Lordship Veldes (German: Herrschaft Veldes) is the name given to that area between the Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinka. As a result of these donations, Bled remained under the sovereignty of the prince-bishops of Brixen for the next 800 years.

It was rare for the bishops to visit their remote possession 300 kilometers away. It was initially administered by ministerial (bonded knights), castellans, and castle staff according to feudal practices. Still, the prince-bishops decided to lease it out in the middle of the 14th century. A Protestant stronghold was established at Bled Castle under a 16th-century lessee. Prince-bishops appointed governors to manage their distant lordships when the leasehold era ended. The administrators were exclusively aristocratic until the middle of the 18th century, but later they included non-nobles.

The town took shape in the mid-19th century by combining the villages of Grad, Milano, Rečica, Zagorice, and Želeče, encircling the lake. A wealthy individual started purchasing land along the eastern lakeshore for his villa, and Grad, Zagorice, and Želeče began to merge. 1960 marked the official recognition of Bled as a town.

Tourism

Lake Bled is the main attraction in Bled, popular with tourists, and the iconic Bled Castle is perched on a rock overlooking the lake. The town is also well known in Slovenia, as well as its vanilla and cream pastry (Slovene: Cremona retina).

During the second half of the 19th century, Swiss naturalist Arnold Rikli (1823–1906) contributed significantly to the growth of Bled as a health resort. Aristocratic guests from around the world have visited Bled for its mild climate. Many sports activities (golf, fishing, horseback riding) are available at the resort today. It is a vital convention center and tourist resort. Mountain treks and hikes can start here, especially in Triglav National Park.

An old legend claims that ringing the bell on the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church will bring you good luck; the Church is located on a small island in the middle of the lake.

Transport

Lesce-Bled International Airport serves the town. The largest international airport in Slovenia, Ljubljana Joe Punik Airport, is 34 kilometers away. On the west side of Lake Bled, the railway station Bled Jezero is located.

Events

In 2011, the World Rowing Championships were held for the fourth time in Bled’s history. 1966, 1979, and 1989 were the previous years when the championships were held there.

A major international chess tournament was held at the Grand Hotel Toplice in Bled in 1961. There was a chess Olympiad held in this city in 2002.

An annual Lindy Hop event in Bled is known as “Swing Bled.”

15 Best Things to Do in Bled (Slovenia)

  1. Bled Castle

    – Castles are by their very nature romantic and remarkable. Despite some of their dark Machiavellian pasts, they deserve to be at the top of travelers’ itineraries. Bled Castle can get downright crowded during the peak tourist season as it is the town’s most prominent attraction.
  2. Vintgar Gorge

    – Bled offers an incredible combination of history, culture, and natural beauty. Another gem of the town is Vintgar Gorge. It was carved from the surrounding rock throughout countless eons of water erosion from the Radovna River.
  3. Lake Bled

    – There are so many attractions in Bled that visitors with limited time can easily choose what to see. A short walk from the town center leads to Lake Bled, which looks like it jumped from a fairy tale.
  4. Church of the Assumption of Maria

    – Built-in the mid-15th century on an island in Lake Bled, the Church of the Assumption still looks pretty much the same today as it did then. A truly unique and remarkable setting attracts young lovers from all over the country who wish to tie the knot there.
  5. Eat Like a Slov

    – Bled is the perfect town for you if you prefer hiking, biking, and kayaking to guided tours in air-conditioned vans. Slovenian cuisine is hearty, unique, and flavorful, even though it isn’t well-known outside the area.
  6. Pokljuka Plateau

    – Another fantastic natural attraction in Bled, but not the easiest to pronounce. Winter sports on the plateau include a biathlon that attracts participants from around the world and cold-weather sports.
  7. Straža Ski Resort

    – Although the resort doesn’t quite compete with its bigger mountain counterparts in the Alps of Italy, France, or Switzerland, it is an excellent place for those with limited alpine skills to enjoy a winter getaway.
  8. Treat Yourself to Bled’s Traditional Cake

    – Locals and visitors love tasting the sweet cake served in Bled’s idyllic alpine setting. Crem “Nita is the traditional cake of choice in the region. The cake is moist, creamy, and buttery but isn’t exactly low in calories.
  9. Hike to the Lake Bled Overlook

    – Besides Bled’s many attractions, hiking to the Ojstrica Bluff overlooking the lake is one of the most popular activities. Some parts of the trail can be treacherous in cold and wet weather, but it is accessible to those with moderate physical fitness.
  10. Triglav National Park

    – This park is home to the highest peak in the country and is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers seeking a getaway from the crowds found at more popular tourist destinations.
  11. Church of St. Martin

    – For generations, other churches stood on the same site before the Church of St. Martin was built. The outside of the building features impressive gothic architecture, and the inside is equally impressive.
  12. Bled Island Gallery

Those who have experienced the natural and humanmade wonders of Bled know that the place has always inspired artists. In the Bled Island Gallery, you’ll find works that portray everything from majestic churches to shimmering lakes, towering castles to idyllic pastures.
  13. The Working Farm Experience

    – Nothing beats getting your hands dirty alongside Slovenians to experience Slovenia like a local truly. You could volunteer as a trash collector, but staying on a working farm for a few days would be a better idea.
  14. Ride the Bohinj Steam Railway

    – Visitors who have ridden the Bohinj Steam Railway in Bled tend to agree that it was one of the highlights of their trip. Unlike minivans, trains provide a sense of the old days you won’t find in a car.
  15. Postojna Caves

    – These are outside Bled and make for an excellent natural retreat. There are a lot of stalactites and stalagmites in the underground caves, which attract families with small children.
