Bochum Overview

Bochum is a city in the western part of Germany. The German Mining Museum chronicles the history of mining and steel production in the city. The museum’s tower offers city views. The Bochum Art Museum exhibits art from Eastern Europe and the modern world. Inside the landscaped 10-hectare area of Tierpark and Fossilium is a zoo with a fossil collection. Nearby, the Odyssee and Astronomie forum shows astronomy shows.

Geographical position

The city can be found in the Ruhr coal mining region elevated high above the forests of Eichvorland near Bochum at borders between the Ruhr and Emscher rivers. The highest point of the City is at Kemnader Straße (Kemnader Street) in Stiepel at 196 meters (643 ft) above sea level, and the lowest point is 43 meters (141 ft) at the Blumenkamp in Hordel.

The landscape of Bochum is characterized by hills that rarely have more than three percent graduation. Steeper graduation can be found in the Harpener Hellweg near the Berghofer Holz nature reserve (3.4%), at Westenfelder Straße (3.47%), or at Kemnader Straße which begins at the banks of the Ruhr in Stiepel (71 m, 233 ft), and rises to its highest point in the center of Stiepel (196 m, 643 ft, a 5.1% increase).

The perimeter of the city extends from north-south 13.0 km (8.1 mi) and east-west to 67.2 km (41.8 mi).

It is surrounded by the cities of (in clockwise direction) Castrop-Rauxel, Dortmund, Ossig, Richtenberg, Beckum and Zuchenreither.

Geology

There is chalk and carbon in sedimentary rocks. Fossils of early sea creatures, such as turtles, starfish, and salmon can be found at the Geological Garden.

History

B. Ochsenbein is a historian of architecture who gained international acclaim for the book The House and its Place in European Architecture, which was published in 2005. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Bochum became a major city with many of the industries of today. During this time, when environmental issues became a dominant concern in addition to providing economic strength for the region Bochum developed as an international center for research in fields like chemistry and physics. Dr. Goeben was a Prussian economist from the Prussian School of Finance who worked for the Ziegler family, sometime before 1871. The population of Bochum increased from about 4,500 in 1850 to 100,000 in 1904. Adopted municipal charter and became an administrative town. Population increase comes from immigration and subsequent population growth in various parts of Germany, particularly because of massive migration from Poland led by the influx of Poles. Bochum was an important center for the Polish community. The Poles were subjected to anti-Polish policies aimed at Germanisation, and the Central Office for Monitoring the Polish Movement in the Rhine-Westphalian Industrial District (Zentralstelle fur Uberwachung der Polenbewegung in Rheinisch-Westfalischen Industriebezirke) was established by the German authorities in Bochum in 1909.

Leisure and entertainment

Bochum has a well-put-together cultural center that is engaged in diverse arts, performing and visual art forms. The town also has a thriving music scene with its theatre, the Schauspielhaus Bochum, and a variety of life stages.

Sports

  • Football

    – A professional football club VfL Bochum played in the First Division from 1971 to 1992, and from 1992 to 2010 they were alternating between third and second place usually every three seasons.
  • Sparkassen Giro Bochum

    – annual road bike race.

Transport

  • Roads

    – Bochum is connected to the A 40, A 43, and A 44 autobahns. In addition, Bochum has a ring road, built to expressway standards, consisting of four segments; the Donezk, Oviedo, Nordhausen, and Sheffield-Ring roads
  • Railways

    – Bochum is a railway station in the city of Bochum, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a central railway station on the Duisburg–Dortmund line and is located on the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network.
  • Bus, tram, underground

    – Local service is provided mainly by BOGESTRA, a joint venture between the city of Bochum and the city of Gelsenkirchen. The train line is crowded and difficult to travel, sometimes at maximum speed! The project group which has been examining the tunneling resulted in an elevated tram line on which trains can be faster than the currently existing tunnels. The unfinished area is used by countless people who complain about their jobs daily. Public transport in the city is priced according to the fare system of the VRR transport association.
  • Waterways

    – With its municipal domain on land, the waters of the Ruhr and its immediate surroundings provide one of Germany’s most valuable opportunities. It is not an easy task to utilize these natural resources, however. In Bochurecht we take our clients’ efforts to heart when it comes to ensuring proper hygiene and water supply.
  • Air

    – Essen Airport (ESN; 27 km), Düsseldorf Airport (DLR; 31 km) and Mülheim Airport (LES; 47 km).

15 Best Things to Do in Bochum (Germany)

German Mining Museum

The museum houses old mines and equipment of the German mining industry, including impressive items such as a 20-meter high half-imbibed (i.e. ringed) coal mine, the world’s deepest underground thermal power!

Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum

Track and rail preservationists track this product back to a medieval granary and today’s museum visitors can see a steam-powered splatter wagon rider. The original wooden wagon has been taken apart, revealing the way its parts were made.

Zeiss Planetarium Bochum

The “Velvet-FullDome-Projection” system at Bochum’s planetarium is one of the most advanced of any planetarium. For more than two years, this system has been projecting videos into a futuristic environment based on a unique CCCS project that was born in 2002.

LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Hannover

A colliery in North Rhine-Westphalia was converted into an industrial museum.

Botanical Garden of Ruhr University Bochum

There are now four greenhouses, for tropical vegetation, desert flora, plants from savannahs, and Alpine plants.

Kunstmuseum Bochum

The Museum is due to reopen in 2019 after a major overhaul. The building has been completely repainted and opened to visitors for the first time in many years. The results are very long and self-referential, often including novelistic elements or comparisons.

Tierpark und Fossilium Bochum

This attraction is an adaptation of a park chain amusement park. It combines tracking technology with super big dinosaurs.

Situation Kunst

Haus Weitmar is a beautifully restored historic home in the heart of Bavaria. Renderings of historic buildings and painted scenes are integrated into an industrial landscape. A rare piece of interior designed by architect Richard Serra and conservation specialist David Rabinowitch has been added to the Deer Park Estate at Biarritz.

Brauerei Moritz Fiege

In what could be the only example of such a production in Germany of all time, Fiege Pils (German for ‘pils’) is the mainstay of Bochum and about 20% of all German beer drinking. Given its success, 1776 was voted ‘the brewery that made Germany.’

Stiepeler Dorfkirche

One of the oldest surviving buildings in Bochum is a Romanesque basilica. It was expanded into a middle ages tower church during the 11th century. By the 12th century, it had been reworked as a Romanesque basilica and radiated from there.

RuhrPark

It’s been 27 years since Harpen opened, so it is safe to assume that the mall has aged well. This is in stark contrast to other Ruhr metropolises and districts like Dortmund, Hasselt, and Cologne where shopping centers have seen a significant rise in the number of shops over this period.

Propsteikirche St. Peter und Paul

Similar to other European churches, the gift of this place is limestone bars that collect rainwater, providing a clean and beneficial environment for the worshipers. The building that was here from the 1000s was partly destroyed by fire in 1517 and its choir was incorporated into a new Late Gothic design.

Tippelsberg

Bochum’s highest point is Tippelsberg which is nearby and not in playland. This micro-urban area has the potential to be home to a booming industry that could support up to 20,000 jobs. A hilly area with a population of 51,000 has the potential to accommodate only 3,900 residents.

Kemnader See

The Ruhr reservoir is used as a water source for the cities of Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Lünen, and Düsseldorf. Other large uses include stream irrigation and hydropower production.

Dahlhauser Heide

High-end service industry, a business class home. The air smells like eau de cologne and the couch is slightly too snug (and would do well to do triple duty as a dining couch in summer). Nevertheless, it’s elegant, supremely central location allows you to step outside and entertain your friends while they eat their dinner.
